Connecting Communities Through VoiceThread

Hello Students,

This week marks the start of our partnership with 7th grade students at the American Nicaraguan School (who our ICS Take Flight student ambassadors will be visiting in just a few weeks!). We welcome our ANS partners to join in our discussion.  Feel free to respond to any of the questions in the comments section below (click on our "How To Post Comments" tab for detailed instructions) or use the VoiceThread above to record your messages!

Part I: Using VoiceThread

This week you may comment using our class VoiceThread, or comment as usual using the comment section below. In order to comment on the VoiceThread, 7Speaks students will need to log in using the account information provided in class. Other visitors will be able to comment by registering for a free account (you will need an email address).

To comment, please click on the “comment” button on any of the slides. There you will have the choice of either recording your voice (microphone icon), typing your words (Letter A icon), or using a webcam (camera icon). There are four pages to this Voicethread, and you can comment on any or all four pages accessed by the bottom right hand arrow. If you are happy with your recording or what you have typed, be sure to save. If not, hit cancel and you may re-record or re-type as often as you like. Click on the camera icon to use your webcam. You may NOT use the doodle function, nor the telephone option (it costs money). Try to find a quiet corner to record your voice - laptop microphones are extremely sensitive!  As usual, all comments will be moderated, and any inappropriate comments will not be published.  Keep in mind proper web etiquette as you choose an avatar and, as always, please use correct spelling and grammar.  This week you may include posts in English OR Spanish.

Here are the questions I would like you to respond to using the VoiceThread:
  • What is your name (first names only)?
  • What is the best thing about where you live? What is the worst thing about where you live?
  • Are there any regional foods that you enjoy, or are particularly proud of?
  • Of all the places you have traveled to outside of where you live, where is your favorite?
  • Where would you like to go that you haven’t been yet?
Part II:

Read this week's assigned article on TeenBiz, "Leaders Promise to Help the World's Poor," (ICS students only), complete the activity, and answer these questions in the comments below.  ANS, please feel free to comment on these questions regarding service as well!
  • What does it mean to be of service?
  • What experiences have you had volunteering or providing service in or outside your community?
  • What do you think are the best ways to help fight poverty in our communities and abroad?
  • Students at ANS: Describe your partnership with Chacente - What service projects have you been involved in and how have you helped?
**Special thanks to the 7th grade blog Write Out Loud for inspiring this week's post and VoiceThread project: http://writeoutloud.edublogs.org/2009/04/04/voicethread-video-week-in-rap-oh-my/

  1. To be of service means to help someone or to do a favor.I haven't really had any experiences with that, but 2 years ago at my summer camp they made s pull out all the weeds in the yard.I think the best way is to donate and give homeless or people in need food, a place to stay, and other essential things.

  2. I think to be in service means to help people out to service them.i have experienced servicing. It was a fun thing to do because i was with my friends .I don't know what is poverty exactly .Is poverty not having what you want all the time? Is it being home less ? Is it not having what you need all the time. is it welfare? I don't know . So there is so any ways for me to answer this question. For homeless people I think there should be a place that should have rooms for them.I think there should be people help them to get back on there feet and when it happens they can leave.the main problem is that they need money that means jobs. but it need to be something needed in the world.

  3. To be of service means to be of help to someone or something in need. Like bring water of food to places and people in need of them. It could also mean giving up things that we don’t need, so that the people who actually need it will have something important to them. I have never really helped change the world in many ways. I have helped pick up trash in Michigan once, but that is really it. I have done a MLK service project with my mom on MLK day, but that was in my neighborhood. To fight and\or help poverty in other communities, would bring food, water, and necessities for people in need. Like in Africa, people die from Malaria every day so if we were going there, we could bring bug nets for them.

  4. I think that to be of service means that you are helping someone and inconveniencing yourself for them. I have helped my community by picking up trash, shoveling snow and not littering. However, to help communities that are not my own I think that I can donate money, give physical aid or help people who are helping others.

  5. I think that to be of service is to help somebody. I think it means helping somebody whether getting them something or helping them stop poverty or actually trying to stop poverty, as mentioned in the Teenbiz article.

I do not have a ton of experience. I have helped clean up my baseball field at the start of the season. I have donated money to charities and people in need. I have also helped raise money for our school. When I go to Nicaragua for the service project I hope I can help by providing service to Chancocente and their school and students.

I think the best ways to assist someone in overcoming poverty is not to just give them money, but to provide them with a job so that they can afford food clothing and eventually a house for them to live in.

  6. To "be of service" means to be ready to serve another person in need of someone to serve them, or do that person a favor. For example, if a women's husband died suddenly and she needed work to be done on her house, then she would be in need of someone to serve them. So if the wife had been asking her husband to fix something for the past 5 years and he never did it, someone could fix that thing for her. The person that could fix it would be someone that is "of service". To conclude, to "be of service" means to be ready to serve another person in need of someone to serve them, or do that person a favor.

An experience that I have had volunteering or providing service in my community is when I was younger, on Saturdays, me and my mom would go to our church and do what was called Saturday for Seniors. This is when some of the more elderly people in the neighborhood come to the church and we give them a full meal and a meal to take home, in a paper bag.

I think that the best way to help fight poverty in our communities is to donate old belongings to the homeless shelters and to donate money to homeless shelters. Finally, you could travel to the country and buy things IN THAT COUNTRY and donate those things (clothes, sanitary supplies, food, school supplies, etc...) to the inhabitants of the country.

  7. Being of service means helping someone or a cause, so that it benefits them. I have never volunteered--I signed up for something at one point, but in the end, I never went and told them I couldn't. I also have never been of service. All I have done is raise money and donate money. The best way to fight poverty is to try to make everyone in the community, and get them to alert others, of the rising crisis of global poverty. Then, create or donate to a drive or charity, and donate old belongings, things that are unused, or money, or a food drive. Also, you could donate to Heifer International, where they can give animals to those in need, to provide a source or making money. Or, someone could create a project similar to Project Chacocente, but in a different country that is in the same position.

    1. Thanks for bringing up Heifer International, Ana! Students, as you think about possible ways of addressing poverty, what do you think a meaningful service project might look like in Nicaragua? Keep in mind Tr. Kate's presentation from last week.

  8. I think service means when you help people that are need. It beniefits them. Also I think that it helps the person realize they are not alone with their problams. One way I helped my community was I went to my church and helped in the pantry. The pantry is where the homeless went and we would hand out food. I packed the foods in baags and I handed them out. I think the best way to help poverty is to tey to help. Also if we try to understand their situation and to be kind. Another thing is if people get other people involved into helping.

  9. To be in service is to help others who need helps for example clean up trash, mowing people's grass, walking their dog. Even Babysitting in considered service.
I once helped some people set up a website. I’ve helped some people with simple things like dropping books or falling.
The best way to fight poverty and such is to actually CARE about the situation.A good portion of America (A VERY GOOD PORTION) Only care about themselves because their rich and popular. Next thing you know their money could have saved someone. But NOPE, THey don’t care.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think it means to be of service is when you try to help out other people from different places also it might means to change the worst to better. I had help ship out goods and foods to the army people that was out fighting in the war and got people to donate goods and food and also some money. I think the best way to help poverty is to make more homes that's less so people can live in also we can help fight poverty by getting people with no jobs a job and maybe get them into a group to help them out of poverty.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Of service means that you have time and energy to do something. I have volunteered at the animal shelter in my neighborhood a couple of times, I’m also a counselor at my neighborhood arts non profit organization NLArts. We have a dog park and community garden on my street and I help with clean up every month on cleaning day. I think the best ways to help fight poverty in our communities and abroad is education. I think this because with education people won’t be on the streets and without homes and instead with a loving family and good job. I also think that with education people are more educated to help others and not only themselves. I also think that with education people will have a better meaning of the world.

  12. To be of service means to help someone or something that is less fortunate than you. Service is also donating your time and money to help a cause. One time in the fall, I was at my favorite park. There was leaves all over the park and a bunch of the kids who I normally meet at the park were cleaning up the mess. They told me that the owner of park is giving us pizza and soda for cleaning up. Although I was to late to join in and get the pizza, I decided to spend my day cleaning the park anyways. I think that that a good way to fight poverty is to donate, and help in non-profit organizations which help get rid of poverty. You can also get people that have less money stocks, or other things that gain money over time, so that over time they will get money and be able to afford food and other necessities. An alternative method is getting them a tree, a well or a animal, something that will give them food or water over time. Finally I think the best way is to build a shelter so less wealthy people will not have to worry about paying for a shelter.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think to be of service means to do something, and when you do this you make a difference. For example going to a soup kitchen, with food in your hands ready to give and share with the less fortunate. To be of service is to bring blankets and pillows and maybe even a cot to a homeless shelter, so the people that live in the homeless shelter can have somewhere to maybe even the slightest comfortable. I know sleeping on a cot is better than sleeping on the floor.

I haven't had many experiences with volunteering in or outside my community. I would like to do so, but I'm forgetful, and I forget that I wanted to that and I go do something else.

I think the best way to help end poverty in our community is have better help for the families in poverty, like inviting them to the soup kitchen and feeding them, so that they don't go to sleep hungry that night. We all know it isn't fun to go to sleep hungry. Maybe we can open a foundation and get the more fortunate people to donate to the foundation that will help the less fortunate.

    ReplyDelete
  14. To be of service to me is to be of help or aid to somebody else, when this happens you make a difference. Such as handing out house hold products to the less fortunate or giving a helping hand to an elderly person.

I unfortunately have not helped out much in my community. I like to remember that everything helps and a simple deed to you can brighten up another persons day. So I try to help with the little things.

I personally believe that the best way to help the poor is to not give money to them but to give money to foundations. But most of all interact with the poor to make them feel like they can get better and have a successful life.

    ReplyDelete
  15. To be of service means to be there and to be committed to helping or to tending to an organization or person. I have volunteered by helping feeding those who couldn't feed themselves. I have also tutored kids who had learning disabilities. I think that the best way to fight poverty is to not to give the poor things but help guide them into a better lifestyle.

  17. I think to be of service means to be helpful to others. You would clean parks, bring canned food to shelters, or bring food to the less fortunate. This would be helping others rather than yourself all the time. This is what I think "to be in service means."

I have cleaned up a park with the motorcycle group I'm apart of. The name of it is Ruff Ryders and we a known by many people. I also collected have collected canned good, and clothes on Martin Luther King day to take to Girad college with my church. I have also cleaned up my street with my neighbors to keep it clean. That's all I've done with providing service.

I think the best ways to help fight poverty in our communities and abroad is to start by helping one community at a time. If we start with one community and help all the families get better jobs if possible then, the others might follow and we won’t have to help all the communities because, they know how already after watching us do one community. We’ll still help all the communities but, we won’t have to do as much work as going from one community to another until we have hit all the communities.

  18. Massiel (ANS Student).

    Hey everyone,

I just wanted to talk about Nicaragua a little bit. What I like the most about my country is that the culture is very well preserved and traditions still remain. Food is another thing I love about Nicaragua because its has a very big variety of dishes. All over the world there's a very big problem with contamination and Nicaragua is part of it. Every day we try to make it get better.

PD: I'm really excited for your visit :) I think we will have lots of fun and we will learn new things about each other. If you have any question about me feel free to ask :)

    Adios!

  21. To be of service I guess means to help those in need. If someone needs help your their to help them. That may mean volunteering at homeless shelters or just giving money to charities. I think that you should stop wasting food because it just seems like you are so unappreciative to what we have and others don't have. That little adjustment in our lives may help millions. Notice I said MAY

    ReplyDelete
  22. Being of Service means helping others, whether in the army or in your own neighborhood trying to help the poor. I have given the homeless food and money when I can and hope to help in better ways. The way to combat poverty is not giving the homeless money though. It's finding them work and a place to live, and that's how we should be helping the poor.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think the word service means helping and doing work for someone. I donate clothes to the less fortunate. We can stop poverty in our communities and abroad by rasing money for the poor, help families get a good job, and get the amount of money they really deserve. Last we could educate the kids that don't go to the best schools.

    ReplyDelete
  24. To be of service means to help and aid people that need help. For example donating money to good causes means to be of service. I have helped out,but only by donating money, another way to be of service is to go to someplace and help them your selfs instead of giving money. I think there are many ways to help fight poverty, but the problem is that some of the ways are very hard. But one way that you could help fight poverty is to donate money to cause that need help to buy medicines, teaching supplies, etc. Another way to help fight poverty is to go to the place that needs your help and offer your help to help aid the other people. I think this is a good way to help aid people but its also hard. Not only is it hard in general, but it is also hard to have a good attitude towards it. For example it's wrong to help only because it makes you look good, to help you have to want to do it for the well being of others and not just for yourself. You can't just say "I'm here to help" and do nothing, you have to actually help as much as you possibly can to do a good job.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think to be of service is to help your community or a person in general. Even if you are helping out at your local community center or helping out the elderly bring in their groceries.

I really haven't had much experience with helping out my community or other people. But I believe that you can help people in different ways. You can help by doing big or small favors. I think one of the best ways to help fight poverty is to donate money to different organizations. Or you could start your own food drive and give food to the poor.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think being of service means that you help someone with something important. A couple of times for my birthday party I asked the people invited to bring toys to donate for Toys For Tots. I think the best way to fight poverty is to donate things that people need. For example, you could donate food, water, and money. Also people can volunteer to help at homeless shelters and other places like that.

    ReplyDelete
  27. To me service means to give back and help out. I volunteered at my church with child care when I was about 10. We can fight poverty by improving education and better waged jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think what to be of service means to help people that are less fortunate then you. One experience I have with community service is once I went to the park and there was a party that had just ended and everyone left their trash all over the ground left. So me and my friend spent 2 hours to pick up all the trash. I think that the best way to fight poverty is to donate food for people that can’t buy it. Also give money to build shelters for less fortunate people.

    ReplyDelete
  29. To be of service to means to help those in need. I have assisted many seniors and have volunteered for many fairs at my local park. I think the best ways to help communities abroad would be by donating things such as money, food and other things that are essential. Even the smallest thing could help some communities.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Personally to me to be of service is to help people who are needed like my classmate Anikah said to help those in need. Almost like doing community work. well my dad is the block captain for my block and so, he gets permits for block parties and things and I live in southwest philadelphia not such a good neighborhood. So me and my dad go to rallys and meetings sometimes and donate and give back and sometimes me and my dad when we ride pass homeless people my dad has a bag full of snacks to give to them. My dad loves the community and knows everyone in it as much as I do. Like i said we should give back to our communities and help anyway we should and can. If we are in need we would want someone to help us so We should help first. I have been in no projects recently actually but, would like to. I am happy for the students representing our school visiting Nicaragua and helping for the Chacocente project.

  31. What does it mean to be of service?

I think to be of service means to do something for someone (or a group of people) or help in a cause that is doing something for someone (or a group of people).

What experiences have you had volunteering or providing service in or outside your community?

I, shamefully, haven't really done much to volunteer to provide service in my community. I do give change to the people on the street when I have it though. I guess that is a way of providing service…

What do you think are the best ways to help fight poverty in our communities and abroad?

I think that some of the best ways for us normal people to help fight poverty in our communities are to donate to shelters and other organizations that help the poor or to just give things like change to people that you see while walking down the street. To help abroad I think donating is a very good thing to do, especially to organizations like Heifer International.

  32. To be of service means to be there to help someone or to be capable of helping or doing something for someone. It could be anything from watering plants to making and giving food to those in need. I’ve done small things like raising and donating money but I can only recall one major thing that i’ve done. When I was in fifth grade my mom, my friend, her mother, and I all went to one of the Ronald Mcdonald house and made dinner for the families there. It was fun to learn how to cook something new and talk with my friend but the best thing was knowing that I was doing something good for other people and in a way for myself. If you do something good for someone else when your done you feel like you’ve accomplished something. I think the best way to help poverty in our communities and abroad is to bring things that are necessary to have like food, clothing, and medical care.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think to be of service is to help someday who needs your help or assistance. This could mean small things, like mowing a lawn or larger things like donating things for charity. Sadly, I haven't done much volunteering, but I do remember when I helped paint the inside of this building with my mother and my sister. It wasn't all fun, since painting a room takes preparations like putting down plastic and things like that, but at the end, it was a ton of fun getting to paint! I think the best ways to help fight poverty is to be of service. Donate things, help out as much as you can. For example, you could not only donate money, but food and clothes as well. All of those things can help fight poverty, and help the poor.

    ReplyDelete
  34. For me to be of service is to help, lend a hand to everyone that needs one. Even if your helping someone in a small way, because something small always leads to something big. You can help in many ways, for example giving money to the poor, or giving money to fundraisers that help cancer or homeless people, or helping the environment. I have helped or volunteered in our outside community a bunch of times.

I remember when I was in fourth and third grade me and my dad helped the city make a new garden plant new trees and plants. Another thing I do a lot is give money to the poor and give them food too. The last time I went to Ecuador my mom and I saw a family of four lying on the street crying for help, there were three kids and one mom. We gave them 20 dollars and took them to restaurant. The owner saw them and kicked them out because she was scared that the poor family would scare people to come in the restaurant. I remember my mom yelling at her and the owner looked at me, and I looked at her, I told her to please let them eat here. She said yes but they had to eat in the back where no one could see them.

I think people should donate money, food, clothes, anything, whether its cancer, homeless people, etc. People can also help the environment by not littering and help clean parks. So see everybody can help in a little way, because that little help you do will make a big change.

    ReplyDelete
  35. To be of service means to help those in need. We can help people less fortunate than our selves in many ways (physical labor, monetarily, friendship). I think, though, while we help others, we need to remember not to be too intrusive or over bearing. We may offend the people we mean to help.

One way I was of service was during my block clean up. I was one of the first people out and working and one of the last to leave. Also, a few months ago when my great-grandmother moved, I did a lot of heavy lifting for her. I moved furniture and helped organize.

The best way to fight poverty abroad is to go to the places that need the most help and really get your hands dirty. Even if you only help one family, you have made an improvement.

    ReplyDelete
  36. To be of service means to help out in whatever way you possibly can, from making cookies and giving them to your local homeless shelter to flying cross-continental to help organize groups for getting clean water to plague infested countries. I’m not the best at doing community service, embarrassingly so. The closest I’ve ever gotten to helping out in my community is planting trees in a local park. With the economic situation, financial help can almost be ruled out completely. At the moment I think the best thing that the we can do is make sure shelters are more available and better equipped for their inhabitants.

    ReplyDelete
  37. To be part of a service project means to help in any way possible. Services that I have done is volunteering at a homeless shelter when I was in third grade. I think the best way for us to help poverty is giving them a shelter and an opportunity to have a good job.

    ReplyDelete
  38. To be of service means to me that you should help out people who are less fortunate than you. All on the neighborhood schools there is graffiti all over the walls. So in summer me and my friend went to one of the schools and helped wash the walls. The best way to fight poverty abroad is to donate money, toys for the children, etc. For people suffering from poverty the small things help a lot.

  39. To be part of a service means to contribute you help out others as much as you can. Some experiences i've had such as cleaning up parks and the sidewalks and more. More Shelters and better resources to help the worlds poor.

    ReplyDelete
  40. To be of service means that you're helping the people around you and making the world a better place for everyone to live in. That you would donate something of yours that others might need way more than you. To put your heart into everything that you do for others so that you can be happy just as much as the people you are giving to.

  41. Being of service means that you help others as much as you can. Some experiences that i have is on Christmas when i volunteered at a homeless shelter. The best way to prevent poverty is to create safer homeless shelters and make programs to help people plan their lives if they're struggling.

    ReplyDelete
  42. To me to be of service is to help others who need it, but only those who need it.I have volunteered at a animal shelter before to help take care of the animals. I have also just fed the homeless and given them spare change. I think the best way to prevent poverty it so create more and safer homeless shelters and make it harder for people to loose their homes. You can also create more opportunities for the homeless and poor to fix themselves and become richer.

  43. My definition for "To be of service" is to be of service of your time and helping others for special needs in general.
About 5 years ago, i used to go to a camp called "Shaw Beacon",and we did community service. It was fun we cleaned the yard, we cleaned up the school that the camp held in, we cleaned up the playground etc. I think that people should probably adopt more kids that's in need that is a poor family. Also, i think that people should go downtown and give the people on the streets food.
I think that people should stop being selfish and try to help people that is poor and try to provide homes, food, and clothes. In conclusion, people should be more of service and try to help the community.

  44. To be of service means to serve to someones uses in a helpful way.One way to show what I mean is say you you help someone cross the street. You're serving them in a helpful way.Anyway, when i was at my aunts house, she took me to the retirement center to see her friends. After that day,i wanted to make them full of energy like me.So the day after went back. This time with cookies. After they ate one, they they were full of energy.I felt good just doing this deed.I think that if we share some of our food with with the people in proverty, you help them have a good meal and you would feel good just giving.

  46. To be of service means to help a number of people in efforts to bring good into their community . I haven't had any experience with community work but I have heard of other organizations helping out in their communities or abroad and I am thankful for that. Before I answer what I think the best way to end poverty is I have some questions. What is poverty? What is the poverty line? How do people get below the poverty line? How common is poverty? And do some people live in poverty and not know that they are, or is it that odvious?
Before you solve poverty you have to understand it from beginning to end, and I'm not so sure I can present a solution for this problem just yet.

To me to be of service is to help your community or organization to fix a problem like poverty. To work with other people like policemen, firemen, navy, chacocente and litter free philly. Sometimes when I have a leftover fruit or change and see a person with a “please help” sign I give my fruit or change to him or her.
