All About...You!

Hello ICS and ANS students!

Thank you to those of you who have joined our conversations on the blog!  Here at ICS we've really enjoyed getting to know a few of you through your posts.  We hope this week to keep the conversation going.

This week, we wanted to share more about ourselves in an effort to learn more about one another.  ICS students, you may post this week as often as you like, and respond to one another, but please make sure to respond to at least one blog prompt below to receive full credit.  This week you may post using the VoiceThread above, or in the comments below.  ICS: we'd love to see more of you posting in Spanish and trying out the voice recorder using the microphone.  It can be absolutely horrible to hear your own voice recorded, I know, but it's great practice for oral presentations!

Successful comments (written or recorded) have been outlined and reviewed before publishing.  And, as a reminder, they are evidence of our best work as writers (no texting talk, please).

Prompts:
  • What cultural, religious, or family traditions are important to you?  When do these traditions occur and what do you do to mark the occasion?  Spring has sprung, it seems; do you mark this time of year with Easter egg dying, or maybe a Jewish Seder?  Please use details and be specific!
  • Do you have a favorite childhood memory that reveals something about who you are today?  Do you have any frightening, funny, surprising, sad, or any other stories in between, you'd like to share? Feel free to use this prompt to write a poem, or a letter to your childhood self -- be creative.
  • What are your hobbies?  Do you play sports, make art, dance, or collect unusual objects?  What pastimes keep you happy and inspired?
  • What musical bands and artists do you love?  Do you have a favorite genre, or album?  Are you a musician?  What kind of music do you play?  Have you ever seen any live performances that you have enjoyed?
  • What book do you think belongs on a 7th grade "must read" list?  What is your favorite book and why?  Do you have any all-time favorite characters?
  • What is your favorite movie, play, or musical?  What do you like about it?  What did it make you feel or think?
  • Who is your personal hero?  Is there someone (perhaps outside of your family) whom you admire?  What do you admire about him or her and why?

  1. I think that one of the best series ever is the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan. This incredible series is about one very talented young man named Will. He is an orphan and lives in the Orphanage of a town ruled by a Barron in a country called Araluen. I won’t give away the beginning because it is a really good part but I will give my opinion on why it is so amazing. It is a really good series and has good characters but it is also set in England but it doesn’t tell you (or at least from what I can tell). In all of the books him and his friends Horace, Alice, and Halt go on adventures with other fine characters and develop as the series goes on. They go through countries and regions and from what I can tell, they are in the English area.

  2. I think a book that would belong on a 7th grade “must read” list is To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s my favorite book, while the Harry Potter series is my favorite series. To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book because I love the characters, the setting, which are both beautifully set up, and I love how the story is set up--the two kids, Scout and Jem, (their nicknames) with their conflicts and adventures, and Atticus, their father, who is defending a black man in the deep south in the early 20th century. The description is amazing, and the writing is captivating and moving. If I could choose an all-time favorite character, it would either be Scout, “Boo” Radley, or Atticus. from To Kill a Mockingbird, or Harry, Hermione, Ron, the Weasley twins, Mrs. Weasley, Professor McGonagall, or Dumbledore, all from the Harry Potter series. OF them all, it would be very difficult to choose.

    1. I think that The Lightning Theif series is a really good series because it's all about a demigod who is just finding out that he is a demigod. His name is Percy jackson,in the series there is a lot of action but also some romantic parts too. The movie wasn't that good and if you read the book then it just makes the movie even worse. I recommend reading this series during the summer on your spare time if you haven't already. My personal favorite would be the last book which is called "The Last Olympiain" it was a really good series.

  3. My favorite artists and bands range from the 60’s to the 80’s. I’m a big fan of Billy Joel and Bob Dylan. My favorite bands are probably the Rolling Stones or the Grateful Dead or Bob Marley and the Wailers. I would have to say that my favorite genre is Rock. I don’t have a favorite album, but I do enjoy The Essential albums. I am not really a musician, but alot of my family plays instruments. I learned guitar but I forgot after not playing it for a while. I have gone to quite alot of live music with my dad. It’s mainly local stuff but nonetheless, I still enjoyed it. I don’t really have a favorite live concert that I have seen. Most of them have been at bars, so sometimes it’s hard to know there name and exactly what they’re playing. Overall I really enjoy music, live or not, and would probably not be able to live without it.

  5. One of my favorite hobbies is Geocaching. Geocaching is a world wide scavenger hunt where anyone can participate. My dad and I are really interested in it. We have only found 4, but that’s because we only started in February. The Geocaches are usually in historical places, like there’s probably one at city hall, Rittenhouse Square, Termini’s bakery, etc. If you are a scavenger hunt freak, like me, you will love this. First, you type in your area code, then the website (geocaching.com) gives you the geocaches around the code you typed in. Then, you click on the cache, read the clues, and you type in the coordinates it gives you (on your phone or computer) and you can see where the cache is. You go to that spot and look for the cache. If you find it, go to the website and “log your visit.” Now you’re ready to find more caches. It’s a WORLDWIDE scavenger hunt so I'm betting there will be one in Nicaragua.

American football, baseball, lacrosse, street hockey and watch basketball and more. I draw somethings that are weird and that I name myself. I do not dance unless if you count touchdown celebrations such as Victor Cruz salsa, billy white shoes Johnson, and many more. I have collected things and stopped like Yoshi a Mario character stuff and water bottles and probably more. I’m not sure what pastimes keep me happy but when I’m older I want to be an NFL Quarterback for the Colts number 17 and I hope you guys have a future that’s good and what you want to be when you get older. I enjoy also lots of video games, movies, and many more.

  8. I love music, a lot. I can play guitar, bass guitar and a little bit of drums. I also sort of sing, but not very well, so I keep that to a minimum. Other people, though, say I have a very nice and original voice, I don’t believe them. I hope to be famous for playing the guitar or bass, but the chances are like a billion to one. I mostly play rock music. I sometimes make my own music, or I learn how to play songs that I really like. But when I like a song that’s like country, I’ll also learn how to play that song. My favorite type of music is like from the 90's and of them even before that time. My favorite genre is rock. Other genres that I like are country, and I sort of like techno and rap. I absolutely dislike pop, I think that it’s very annoying, like a chihuahua waking you up every minute while you're sleeping. My favorite artists/bands are; A Day to Remember, Green Day, All Time Low, Betty Davis, Breaking Benjamin, Brokencyde, Linkin Park, 3 Days Grace, Nirvana, The Clash, Eminem, Johnny Cash, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Kings of Leon, The Kinks, The Beatles, Justin Bieber, Nevershoutnever, One Direction, Queen, Children of Bodom, The Ramones, Slipknot, The White Stripes, The Who, Weezer, The Sword, Asking Alexandria, and so much more! I have never seen any live performances, but I have always wanted to go to a Michael Jackson live performance, but since he’s not alive, I don’t think that will be happening. I have never really liked his songs, though. I have also really wanted to go to Justin Bieber, One direction, Nevershoutnever, and Eminem live performances. But I've also been to live performances, but by non-famous people, like at bars and stuff.

  9. I love to read. I read books about crime, mystery, fantasy, violence and repugnant things and, mostly books for older people. Like for 20 year olds, if you understand awesome, if you don’t it’s OK. My favorite book isn’t really just one book but it’s a trilogy, meaning it’s a book series, with only 3 books. The first book of the trilogy is called “Girl with the dragon tattoo”. The other books are called “Girl who played with fire” and “Girl who kicked the hornets nest”. They are made by a man named Stieg Larsson I think everyone should read the book because it’s very good, or maybe I’m just being a biased. My favorite character would either have to be Mikael Blomkvist or Lisbeth Salander. Blomkvist is a investigative journalist who has had many affairs and Salander is a very good computer hacker, she is pale and very skinny. The books could be better if the characters were all described a bit more. But these books have very descriptive words and you’re able to just visualize about what’s happening. Though, it has very offensive and gruesome things. It also has a few bad words, but not used very often, like only every two or three chapters (the chapters are very long). You might feel very uncomfortable or awkward while I reading, I din't. But the words make it feel like you're actually IN the book! I don’t really think that it is a good book for ALL audiences, because I know someone who read it and she’s about 30 and she thought the book was very inappropriate. She couldn't believe that I had read the book. You have to be a bit mature to read the book, and it also uses foreign words so you have to figure those words out, and the books were originally written in Sweden, and they aren't really translated well. But I absolutely love this trilogy and you should ought to try reading them.

The songs that are at all times in my playlist are Bohemian Rhapsody,One love, Clock and yellow submarine. My hero is Bob Marley because I love the way he speaks on his songs. I think that his songs are way better than the music that is played in the radio nowadays.Im a little old school but I still think some of the guys like Lady gaga and Taylor Swift.

  12. A family tradition that’s important to me is to go on a vacation every year for a week. We go all over the U.S.A. and have an amazing time. Each year is a new place, and this year is a mystery to me but, I know it’ll be fun there. Hobbies I used to have was karate, and basketball. Now I just go to the YMCA and it’s so much fun. Artists I like are Michael Jackson, and LMFAO. My favorite movie has to be either National Security or Transformers 3. I like National Security because it’s so funny and it has action. I like Transformers 3 because it has lots of action and it has a=such an awesome movie. You have to see it to believe it. My personal hero now is my dad because he’s a detective. He helps keep our street safe and keeps me out of harms way. I also used to have another personal hero when I was in karate. He was my instructor Mr. Isaac. He was my hero because he pushed me to get my black belt. He taught me well and then on the day of graduation, he gave me my black belt. I was so happy and so was my mom. It all ended when the Karate school moved to center city. I wasn’t able to go anymore so I stopped going. It was so much fun there and I’m always wishing I could go back.

  14. I don’t have a childhood memory that reveals something about who I am today. I remember a few months back falling asleep on my godmother’s couch and woke up; when I woke I fell back to sleep, but my eyes were still a little open. When I was laying there I felt dizzy and my chest felt like something or someone was sitting on it. As I tried to call for help I was screaming no one could hear me because my mouth was moving, but nothing wasn’t coming out. I tried and I tried. When I told my mom she began to laugh. But, I guess no one believes the boy who cried wolf. So, ever since that day this has been happening to me on some nights. But, I know this happened to me in real life; I couldn’t been dreaming, but it was very scary.

  17. I would have to pick three books I wouldn’t be able to pick just one, so my three books would be in order from least to best (But they are all amazing) 1) The Invention of Hugo Cabret. The Invention of Hugo Cabret was written by Brian Selznick. And it’s a really thick book but most of it is pictures. 2) The Help. The Help was written by Kathryn Stokett, and although the ending wasn’t all that great the book itself was really good.
    3) The Hunger Games Trilogy. Yes, trilogy means three so yes you guessed it there are three books in the series but they are all really good. The first one is called Hunger Games this one may be the best in the series the way it is written is superb. The next one is called Catching Fire. That one is not as good but a close second. Catching Fire is probably my personal favorite. The last book in the series is called Mocking Jay. Mocking Jay is most definitely the worst book in the series but still pretty good. The reason that Mocking Jay the worst is because the beginning is kind of slow and the action points come and go quickly. So those are the three books that I would pick. (Or you could say five.)

  18. As a child every day I would sit and think in the bright summer light. At times I would even think about what I did that day my mistakes, my accomplishments. I still do during class, before I go to bed, in the car, anywhere. My accomplishments did not matter but my mistakes were a weight on my shoulders. Even if they were resolved I would still hate myself for it. Once me and my best friend had a fight we are still friends but with holes in our relationship. It is my fault for that. That weight is still on my shoulders. If there were one piece of advice somebody told me that I wished I listened to is to leave things in the past and to just look forward in the future.

  19. I love music. I used to play the violin in 3rd grade but stopped in 4th because it’s really hard to do. I can also play some piano but I’m not a musically trained. I love many different types of music. I mostly listen to pop music though. With pop music you can dance and sing along to all your favorite songs. Many of my favorite artists are pop music icons. My favorite artists are Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Elton John, Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Prince, and Christina Aguilera. I love Britney Spears the most though because she’s a pop music icon and no matter what happens in her life she always comes back stronger every time. My favorite bands are The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Jackson 5. My favorite bands are from the 70’s and 80’s but I think that those 3 bands are true legends to music and have been favorites of mine since birth. My favorite album of all time is the one and only Thriller by Michael Jackson. I love this album because it shows Michael Jackson at his best and everyone can come together to listen to it. Although Thriller is my favorite album of all time my favorite songs belongs to the Princess of Pop Ms. Britney Spears with her #1 one hit song ...Baby One More Time, (You Drive Me) Crazy, Oops...I Did It Again, I’m A Slave 4 U, Toxic, Me Against The Music ft Madonna, Piece Of Me, Circus, and Till The World Ends. I know I have a lot of favorite songs but I fell in love with every single one of those songs and can never stop listening to them. I’ve seen multiple singers live. I’ve seen Britney Spears in The Circus Starring Britney Spears tour, Justin Bieber’s My World Tour, and so much more. If I had to pick of my favorite performer it would be Britney Spears because she’s done amazing performances that people will remember forever. For example, her 1999 Billboard Music Awards performance of …Baby One More Time/ (You Drive Me) Crazy, her 2000 VMA performance of I Can’t Get No Satisfaction/ Oops... I Did It Again, her 2001 VMA performance of I’m A Slave 4 U, and the famous 2003 VMA performance with Madonna, Christina Aguilera, and Missy Elliott.

  23. I love rap, but not the normal rap you here today, I mainly like old school rap. My favorite artist is Eminem, but I also like other rappers. I am a musician, because I love to rap and I use to play guitar. I played guitar because I use to like rock a lot and then I got more into rap and had to give up guitar. When I liked rock I saw three bands in concert, which I liked. I saw Good Charlotte, Boys like Girls, and Metro Station, but I was really only going to the concert for Good Charlotte. Later this year I am seeing slaughterhouse in concert, which is a rap band of four rappers, Joe Budden, Royce da 5’9, Crooked I, and Joell Ortiz. My favorite in this group is Joe Budden. There was another rap group I really liked called D12 with Eminem, Proof, Swifty Mcvay, Kuniva, Kon Artis, and Bizarre, but they broke up when one of the members (Proof died). He was actually the second person to die in this group, Bugz being the first. It's hard for me to decide which my favorite album is but there are a few I really like; The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, D12 World and Searching For Jerry Garcia. In the end I really like rap, but not the new stuff today like Lil Wayne, and Drake.

Some pastimes that make me happy is when I draw or practice the bass. The low deep tone of the bass always calms me down and makes me relaxed. And when I draw I usually draw old cartoon characters.

It feels like I just slept and had happy dreams. I I like the language in some books too.like books that make you feel like you are there. Another hobby is making art. I like drawing and painting. I like drawing people and animals. When I paint I like to use many different bright colors because I think color is very important in art. Sometimes I also like to write stories. I like that when you can express your feelings without saying them out loud. Writing is also fun when you want to lie. You can say whatever you want and pretend that it is true. You can write some things that you would never say out loud.

  26. Some values I hold are classic family values. I want a united family who always have each others backs and love one another no matter what. Other Values I hold are religious. I come from a largely Catholic background and try to keep on the tradition as I live. We always go to My Aunts for Christmas and have a large feast with Mario Lanza music playing. It's a classic American Holiday and I love that. I always dream of living in the 1950's big business Coca-Cola era, and I try to live like that today.

Somethings that I don’t really share with people. I like to draw things that come to my mind and just make doodles and sketches. And sometimes I like to make collages and put them on my wall. Sometimes I like to just relax and go outside and draw what I see. Nature is beautiful and a good idea to get your drawings of from.

The types of music that I don’t really like are rap and classical music. Rap is really annoying to me but classical isn’t all that bad its just that it’s my type of music. I also hate country just because sometimes the singers voices are really annoying. I’ve been to many live concerts such as the Who, Bob Seeger, Foo Fighters and many more and they were all great.

I play the drums and I’ve been playing since I was 5 and I love it. I go to a music school called Bluebond and they have a band program that I’ve been in since I joined the music school. We always play rock and every show has a theme like only 70’s music. We preform at the Trocadero in Chinatown but this time we are playing at Dobs on South st. Overall I love music and playing drums.

My favorite bands are Maroon 5 and One Direction, but my favorite artist is Justin Bieber. Out of those three I can't choose which one I love the most because in my opinion they are all good artist. My favorite song from Maroon 5 is "Misery", My favorite song from One Direction is "What makes you beautiful". Finally my favorite song from Justin Bieber is his new single "Boyfriend". I love many other songs, but there is too many to say. I have seen a couple live performances, but the one I enjoyed the most is a Maroon 5 performance. 32. I grew up listening to different genres of music, so now that i’m older I don’t really have a favorite genre. My favorite band is either Metric or Little Dragon. I think the singers in both bands have a really beautiful tone every time that they sing a song. My favorite singer right now is this girl named Asa. I like her because you can listen to her album and be listening to some upbeat song and the next song that comes on is slow and gives you a funny feeling inside. I also like that since she speaks french she includes that in her songs. I play guitar and I absolutely love it. Usually I play whatever I feel like if I can figure out the chords. Sometimes if there’s a song I really like I search it up on the chords on the internet and try and play along. It works most of the time. I’ve never been to a concert that absolutely blew me away but i’m looking forward to seeing one.

My favorite singers are Adele, Billy Joel, and Lights, and Lily Allen, but that’s just a few to name. My favorite band are Snow Patrol, NSN (Never Shout Never), The Kooks, The Shins. But out of all of these my favorite band/singer is definitely Snow Patrol. My music taste varies because sometimes it changes all the time. I wouldn’t say that I have a favorite album, but I like 21 by Adele a lot. When I was younger I tried to learn how to play the piano, but I didn’t like it. So I can’t play any instruments, but I wish I could. If I could play any I would want to play the bass guitar. I’ve seen a few of concerts, and my favorite was Owl City, just because it was an my first concert and it was really good. I also enjoyed it because the opening performance was amazing: Lights. I didn’t hear of her before I saw the concert, but now she’s one of my favorite artists. In a few weeks I might go to a Snow Patrol concert which I’m really excited about.

  34. I have many hobbies that I enjoy. One hobby that I enjoy is soccer. I play soccer outdoor in the fall and indoor in the winter. It is really a lot of fun for me! Soccer is a great pastime! I usually play defense which is really okay for me, I like playing defense! I also really love to write. I don't like writing nonfiction, I love to write fiction! I love to write stories, novels, etc. but I have a nasty habit of never finishing what I start. At the moment, I'm writing continuations of a show/book that I really enjoy and it's really cool to decide what happens to the characters. Another hobby of mine, is watching and reading anime/manga! I love manga/anime! Drawing is also another hobby of mine. I'm OK at drawing in cartoon, and that's mostly it. I can't do the type of drawing in which you can sketch someones face, unless I sketch it using a cartoon style! I play the piano and sing, but my singing isn't really that official (I don't take classes) but I am performing in a play that I will have to sing in. I play piano officially, meaning I do have recitals and I take lessons, but even though I love the piano, I absolutely detest the lessons! My problem with the recitals is that I have terrible anxiety issues. I'm really nervous whenever I have a recital which makes me not want to do them.

  35. My personal hero is Pablo Sanchez. Pablo is a character off of backyard sports(game i play on my wii) and he is really shor, fast and is one of the best players in the game. He normaly wears really baggy jeans, a orange shirt and a soild blue hat. I admire him because he is so small and he is good at active things. Which since i'm short and really active he is like me in a similar way. Maybe not clothes wise but still I admire him.

  36. A favorite childhood memory is when me and my brother had thought it would be fun if we went surfing down the stairs with a mattress. So we put one at the end of each stairs and we used to slide on and when we landed we didn't end up on the mattress we had hit the wall but it didn't hurt because we started laughing really hard and we looked at each other and said at the same time lets do it again my mom came home and saw us sliding down and we had hit her by an accident. She fell and just laughed

  37. I have a couple books that i think should be on the 7th grade must read list. First I think that the Hunger Games trilogy should be on the list. It's an easy read and really fun once you get into it. Also I think that the book To Kill A Mockingbird should most definitely be on the list. It is my favorite book of all time. It's really fun to read because of the characters but at the same time deals with very serious issues that really get you to think. My all-time favorite characters are between Scout or Atticus from To Kill A Mocking bird. the reason why they're my all time favorite characters is because Atticus is just so wise and just such an amazing character. If the world had more Atticus Finch's the world would definitely be a better place. The reason Scout is one of my favorite charecters is because well she is a character. I love how she always has something to say and can determine right from wrong without being influenced by other peoples point of view which I think is wonderful.

  38. A hobbie I have is drawing. I love all types of art. I find art fun and it inspires me to draw creative things. I go to many art classes. Right now I am in a pottery class where I am learning to make bowls and other things with clay. In my art classes I have learned that art is everywhere you look. It can be as simple as the shape of your house, to the colors of a blooming flower, or the way a stranger’s expression looks. Art is a beautiful thing.

  39. My family tradition is very common. My grandfather and grandmother throw a Christmas and Thanksgiving party every year. Even though they do this every year this is special to me because I get to see my family that live far away like Jersey or Delaware and the parties are so fun. Everyone has a good time. They spend a whole week preparing the food and the house with a whole lot of love just so the family will feel welcomed. But, knowing my family they make it feel at home. As soon as you walk in you’re bombarded with hugs and kisses and cheek squeezing and gasps because apparently, "You've gotten so big since I last saw you!!" I get it every year from at least three different people. I enjoy it, though because being in the presence of my family always makes my day or week or whatever. With all the jokes, hugs, kisses and drinking (by the adults) it just makes it all the more fun. Especially when you have a family full of jokers.

  41. My hobbies are to play sports with my friends, read, wrestle with my siblings, listen to music and go on the computor. My 3 favorite sports are football, basketball and wrestling. When I was young I would keep myself happy and inspired by playing with my siblings and playing at a park called Palumbo where many of my friends would go every day also.

  42. I enjoy many pastimes such as reading and sports. One of my favorite sports is baseball. There are many people who have not fully been introduced to the awesomeness of baseball, but I have. I understand that it is fun and anyone from any age can play it. It requires more equipment than some other sports but it is still a fun and quick pastime. Another one of my favorite pastimes is football. All you need to play is a football and... well, that is about it. Obviously you need other people to play it with and the more the merrier. I love reading because it takes you to a whole new reality. Whether it is a kingdom far, far away, or the story of a kid with a hard life, there are so many options of reading you can never be bored by it. Plus, you can do it when you're alone in your room, on the plane, in a car or even on the train. That is why I love reading as a pastime. I do not have many hobbies. I never really found something like sewing or designing web sites.
