Surfaces serve their own purposes...

A stereotype is an oversimplified, but widely held view of what a whole group of people is like, or a characteristic that they have.
Because it is a view that is so simplified, and can often often hurtful, stereotyping can lead to assumptions, as well as bias. Bias is a preconceived opinion that is not based on actual experience or is based on limited experience.

For this week's blog prompt, please respond to the following questions on the topic of stereotypes.  As always, answer each question in complete sentences, and in separate paragraphs (skip a line to show new paragraphs).  This week's post calls on you to REVIEW, WATCH, READ, and CONNECT.  Please do all three thoroughly, and answer all parts of each question for full credit!

**As always, don't forget to compose in a google document and proofread for CUPS before posting!

1.  Review our reading so far in American Born Chinese.  Find and describe an incident that Jin goes through that illustrates a form of stereotyping.

2.  Watch the video, "I Have To Deal With Stereotypes" below and react to the following questions.
  • Give examples of the Asian stereotypes that bother and amuse Kevin.
  • What evidence does Kevin offer that combats these stereotypes?

3.  Read the Wikipedia entry on East Asian Stereotypes (click here) and respond to the following questions:
  • Describe and react to at least two of the stereotypes described.  What is the stereotype and what does it make you feel, think, wonder...?).
4.  Bonus Question:  Have you ever had to deal with stereotypes?  If so, describe the stereotypes you have faced, and perhaps, combated.

  1. Jin Wang is a boy that lives in San Francisco, California. He moves to a different city in California. On Jin's first day of school the teacher pronounces his name wrong and said he moved from China which he didn't. Then a student in the classroom asks if Jin and his family eat dogs and cats. This is a incorrect stereotype because not all Chinese people eat that and Jin is Chinese-American, meaning his ethnicity is Chinese but he was born in America. Jin also speaks English most of the time. Some stereotypes Kevin deals with because he is Asian are slanted eyes, eats fried rice, eggrolls and dumplings. These aren’t true because people eat a variety of things. Some Asian don’t even like the things posted above. The evidence he offers is the food that people assume that certain races like to eat. Like African-Americans eat only catfish and fried chicken, mexicans eat tacos, echilladas, and more. These are very stereotypical and untrue. One stereotpype of Asian men are that they are predators of white women. I don ‘t think this is true. This is a really disrespectful stereotype because they have no proof that they always go after white women. This is a insult to Asians because people don’t have the right to say this about other humans. Another stereotype is of Asian women being referred to as a “China Doll”. This is very disrespectful because it’s a inaccurate judgement. It is also un-kind because it referres a human bieng to being a doll. This is a closed-minded opinion and un-true.

  2. In the video Kevin said that people say that he is cheap, nerdy, and that he has no social life. Also that people say that all they eat is fried rice, egg rolls, and dumplings and that Kevin goes through stereotypes all the time.
The evidence he offers to combat these stereotypes is that he says his phone rings all the time and that he has a lot of friends.
One of the stereotypes I do not like is when people make generalizations of what you eat. For example, people say that Asians only eat fried rice and dumplings. It makes me fell upset because not all the people in the world can eat the same thing and like what you eat. It makes me think that if you do that to other people, it is OK if someone does it to you. Another stereotype I do not like is when people say you have no social life. It makes me feel like that person does not care what you feel or how you are going to react. It make me wonder why does that person really care if you have a social life or not.
I am Latin and people say that all Latins only eat rice and beans. other people say that all Latins speak Spanish and have a Spanish accent. Most of that stuff is not true. For example, not all Latins eat rice and beans, most of Latin people speak another language and if their really good at that then they do not have a Spanish accent.

  3. In American Born Chinese the stereotype that Jin has been through is that...
All Asians are from China, That Asians eat dogs
I think that is very disrespectful because what if someone made a stereotype about them and they would feel what Jin has to go through. These stereotypes show up in the book when Jin’s teacher introduces Jin to the class and she says that he came all the way from China when he came from San Francisco. Also when the teacher introduced Wei Chen to the class and he said he was from China when he was from Taiwan.

The examples Kevin said bother him were that
All Asians are Cheap and that they are Nerds, and that they have on social life. He tries to defend his self by saying he does have a social life and showing that he isn’t nerdy and cheap.

The Yellow Peril, I think is very racist because whoever came up with this must not like Asians or they think they are too smart but why would they come to the U.S and try to take our jobs. Personally, the person who made this I think was white because they were talking only about Asians taking Caucasian people’s things.
And the Perpetual Foreigner, I think is very racist as well because if you look in lots of places in the U.S maybe more than half of the people in that community would say that they are not miserable and that they like what they are doing and how they are living.

The stereotypes are that Asians are miserable in the U.S and that Asians would take over the U.S. These stereotypes make me feel like if I were Asian I would be very angry and upset and /i would wonder who made it. So I probably wouldn’t like a lot of people.

  4. In American Born Chinese, Jin has to deal with stereotypes like that he's from China, and that he eats dogs. Not only are stereotypes disrespectful, but they can also be offensive. Not all stereotypes are mean, though.

Kevin has to deal with stereotypes like that he has slanted eyes, and that all he eats are egg rolls, dumplings, and fried rice, he has no social life, and that he likes Pokemon. A way he combats them is that he gets someone to call him and they talk about a "party" to prove that he has a social life.

The "Yellow Peril" is an Anti-Asian stereotype saying that Asians are coming to America to steal the white people's jobs. Another stereotype that has been mentioned mostly in the media is that Asians are nerdy and weird. Like in Sixteen Candles, the character Long Duk Dong was portrayed as an Asian weirdo with a crazy accent (even though I love that movie and I don't find it offensive at all).

I pretty much have to go through stereotypes about every day. People come up to me (assuming that I'm fluent in Chinese) and ask me how to say their name or say: "Ching chong. What did I just say?" I absolutely positively hate that and I think it's so offensive when people say that so me. When I was younger (still at ICS, though), some kids would try to "imitate" me by squinting or making their eyes slanty and saying "ching chang chong" to me. Some have even tried to give me the "Chinese middle finger," (I honestly have no idea if that even exists) which is basically holding up your pinky, and then they would ask me if I was offended.

They like fried chicken and catfish. First of all I don't eat catfish. I don't even know what it tastes or look like. The second stereotype is that every Jamaicans wears dreads. I don't think that's true because i have a Jamaican friend and she has pretty curly hair. I haven't had to deal with stereotypes. But some of the people i know have to deal with stereotypes. Such as they only eat tacos and burritos or that they eat shrimp fried rice or that they only drink milk for dinner.

  7. What do Asians eat...?
Just because you’re Asian, Chinese, or Japanese doesn’t mean that you enjoy eating cats, egg rolls, fried rice, and other things that comes from those cultures. Another thing people say is that if you‘re from that race you watch Pokemon. Those thing make me feel like if I was a person that came from that culture I wouldn’t be respected. I think those things are judgements are something that people should think about before they speak upon it, because it can hurt people’s feelings even if the aren’t from that race. I wonder where those rumors started.

  8. Throughout the story of American Born Chinese Jin faces stereotypes about his character and race. For example, when he went to the new school, people thought that since they’re Asian they must like each other and will get married at a young age. Another example of a stereotype in the story is when he got to school people thought his country ate dogs, and told him to stay away from their dog.

In the article I read that people stereotype about that since they’re Asian they must have mastered the art of Kung-fu, or mixed Martial arts. And that they were born to have learned it. Another stereotype is that Asian women are aggressive/predatory gold diggers. Gold diggers are basically women that date or marry older gentlemen for their money, jewels, and riches.

Bonus: I know that there is a stereotype about African-Americans, that we love chicken. Especially fried chicken. It’s true, I do like fried chicken but love...uh I don’t know. I have no idea how this stereotype began, but I know that were not the only people who love chicken. It’s not like white people love chicken, or Mexican people love chicken, or even if European people love chicken. Chicken is chicken, fried chicken is just fried chicken. If you love chicken... then I guess you love chicken.

  9. In the begging of the story Jin goes to a new school and his teachers just assumed he was born in China when he wasn’t and that was a stereotype.
A stereotype that bothered Kevin was that all Asians have small and slanting eyes and eat dumplings and egg roles. Evidence that Kevin offers that combats these stereotypes is that he’s really smart and nerdy also all Asians eat are dumplings and egg roles and that they play Pokemon all day.
The stereotype is model minority stereotype. This stereotype makes me feel mad because Asians are hard working people and they aren’t lazy and all don’t have criminal tendencies. The other stereotype is stereotypes of physical attributes and traits it makes me think people who make these stereotypes are dumb because Asians are often stereotyped as having poor English language skills which is not true because a lot are born in America.
For the bonus somebody has told me to go back on the corner where I belong because he thought that all blacks smoke and sell drugs.

  10. In American Born Chinese, there is one part in the beginning, when Jin is introduced to his class, that his teacher and classmates being stereotypical to him. The teacher first pronounces his name incorrectly, then said that he moved from China. After this a boy in his class asks if he eats dogs, and instead of his teacher saying that this is mean and stereotypical, she says he stopped when he moved to America.
Kevin says that the stereotypes that bother him the most are that Asians are cheap, nerdy, and have no social life. He combats these by saying that he bought an expensive calculator, that he got a B+ and that he has lots of friends. Then he gets a call from his "friend".
One stereotype is that men are insensitive to woman, I have never heard this stereotype and it surprises me. The china doll stereotype is that Asian woman can be controlled by white men, I have also never heard of this stereotype but it seems offensive as well.
Well I suppose when I was little I was blond and so I had to deal with the dumb blond stereotype, but it doesn't really bother me, and now my hair has darkened into brown, so I don't have to deal with that anymore.

  15. Stereotype is when someone judge you when they know nothing about you.I never really deal with stereotype because I don't want me say behind my because to me if you talk about I know you want to be me.To me if you stereotype someone you are so rude because how are you going to judge someone and you never met them.In American Born Chinese when Him move to American he deal with stereotype to because when the teacher tell the the class about them and then they started think Chinese eats dogs.

  16. Dear Tr.Lacey,
Stereotypes hurt everyone in every way. In ABC Jin has to face a stereotype as soon as he gets introduced. He's teacher says his name wrong and doesn't even care. Then a kid asked the teacher if he Jin ate dogs? The teacher says he probably stoped when he came to America. She didn't even ask Jin if he did or not. She just assumed he did.

With Kevins problem he gets stereotypes all the time just because he's Asain. The stereotypes he really hates are: he's a nerd, he has no social life & that he is cheap. He tries to comeback saying he can afford better thing and that his phone rings all the time.

I think It was sad when I read the stereotypes. I hated it when i read about the females. The way they said the sones were represented in little dolls. How most women are war brides & prostitutes. It was worst when I read that most people think Asain men hate their wives & beat them.

  18. Jin Wang is an Asian boy from San Fransisco that moved to California. He is usually stereotyped by his peers. For example, when Jin first went to his school one of his peers asked the teacher did he eat dogs, that was very rude & disrespectful because not all Asians eat dogs.

Kevin finds it very rude when people stereotype him just because he is Asian. The 3 main things they think about him is : he is cheap , nerd & no social life. He shows the public that he has a expensive calculator to show that he is not cheap. Then , shows that he gets a B plus on his test. He does all this to show other people what it is like to be stereotyped.

“The Yellow Peril” is a phrase that is used by Caucasians to refer to an Asain stealing there job. “The Yellow Peril” stereotype makes me think , do you actually think/ wonder that stole your job or you just wasn’t doing your job, but that makes me feel very rude because they are so disrespectful to a race that doesn’t involve them. “ Model Minority “ started as a good trait but then resolved to saying that Asian people are “hardworking, politically inactive, studious, intelligent, productive, and inoffensive people who have elevated their social standing through merit and diligence” . This is very disrespectful & maybe not all Asian are “hardworking, politically inactive, studious, intelligent, productive, and inoffensive people who have elevated their social standing through merit and diligence”.

One stereotype that I have seen is that all black people prefer fried chicken , mac & cheese and watermelon. Or that all Latinos eat Spanish food.

  19. Jin experiences stereotypes when he first moves to his new class and a boy in his class tells the teacher that his mom says that all Asians eat cats. And also the boys start a rumor that Jin and another girl Susie (who is Asian too) are going to get married at age 13.
Some of the stereotypes that Kevin has to deal with are, 1. He’s cheap 2. He’s a nerd, and likes Pokemon 3. He has no social life 4. He always eats dumplings, egg rolls and fried rice. Kevin tries to make these stereotypes not true by saying that he has a new calculator but then that makes him nerdy. Also he says that he has a B+ but that’s not that bad.
One of the stereotypes for Asian men are that they are predators to women. That was probably a stereotype when the Americans were at war with the Japanese. It makes me feel that we have too many stereotypes and that not all Asians are like that. Another stereotype was that the Asian boys have bowl cuts and the girls have over-grown bangs. Also they don’t understand English.

  20. In American Born Chinese Jin is stereotyped when he comes to his new school because people think chinese eat dogs. “My momma says chinese people eat dogs”(Gene page 31). People also think that Jin and Suzy will get married by the age thirteen. “When the class finally figured out that we weren’t related, rumors began to circulate that Suzy and I were arranged to be married on her thirteenth birthday”(Gene page 31). Things that bother and amuse Kevin is that people think he is a nerd, have no socail life, and is cheap. People ask him if he is going to eat dumplings and fried rice for dinner they call him a loser. In the artical “stereostypes of east asians” it said that asian men have been protrayed as threats to white women. This makes me wonder how do people base their reactions of one person of a race and asume’s that of eveyone in that race.

  21. One of stereotypes that Jin goes through is when the first time in Mayflower Elementary School, one of the classmate, Timmy asked “My momma says Chinese people eat dog.” (Gene Yang, 31). One of the Asian stereotypes that bother and amuse Kevin is that first he’s cheap, he’s a nerd, and people think that he has no social life. The evidence that Kevin offer to combats the stereotypes is he said that he’s not cheap as people think because he can buy brand new calculator, even it’s make him looks like a nerd. But he also offer that he also not a nerd. He said that he don’t got all a’s, he said he’s a bad guy. Because people think that if you got all a’s you are a nerd. He also said that he has a lot of friends and his phone ringing constantly all the times which proofed that he has a social life. One of the stereotype in the wikipedia I found is that, physiological caricatures of East Asians describe as slant eyes. Another stereotypes I found is that people said that East Asians always has hair type like "bowl cut" hair style (boys) or overgrown bangs (girls). East Asians also often stereotyped as having inherent skill in the martial arts, and have bad English. I believe those stereotypes are totally not true. I think they shouldn’t say things that not totally true, and without any proves.

  22. When Timmy said that his mom said chinese people eat dogs. Some stereotypes are very offensive to the culture that the person may be referring to. But not all stereotypes are offensive.
When Kevin said that chinese people are cheap, nerdy, play Pokemon, and have no social life. One way Kevin proves that the "no social life" stereotype is not true, he has a friend call him to ask him if he's still going to the party.
I the 19th century, white people said that the chinese were going to come over to America and take all the jobs. This was called the "Yellow Peril." Numerous anti-Asian sentiments were expressed by politicians and writers, especially on the West Coast, with headlines like "The 'Yellow Peril'" (Los Angeles Times, 1886) and "Conference Endorses Chinese Exclusion" (The New York Times, 1905)[4] and the later Japanese Exclusion Act. The American Immigration Act of 1924 limited the number of Asians because they were considered an "undesirable" race.[5] Australia had similar fears and introduced a White Australia policy, restricting immigration between 1901 to 1973, with some elements of the policies persisting to the 1980s. On 12 February 2002, Helen Clark, then prime minister of New Zealand apologised "to those Chinese people who had paid the poll tax and suffered other discrimination, and to their descendants. She also stated that Cabinet had authorised her and the Minister for Ethnic Affairs to pursue with representatives of the families of the early settlers a form of reconciliation which would be appropriate to and of benefit to the Chinese community." [6] Similarly, Canada had in place a head tax on Asian immigrants to Canada in the early 20th century; a formal government apology was given in 2007 (with compensation to the surviving head tax payers and their descendants).
Another on was " Perpetual Foreigner." In many periods of America's history, Asian Americans have been perceived, treated, and portrayed by many in U.S. society as "perpetual" foreigners who are unable to be assimilated and inherently foreign regardless of citizenship or duration of residence in America. The stereotypes that the world gives not to only chinese people, but to all races, can be not only be very offensive but dangerous.
One stereotype that I heard constantly when I was younger is that "all black people fried chicken and watermelon," not "catfish and fried chicken (Kevin!)" If your going to name stereotypes get them right. Anyway, I think that that that stereotype is completely not true! I'm black and I don't like fried chicken. Although
I do love watermelon. So that's it.

  23. When Jin first arrives he is attacked with stereotypes and assumptions. For example, Jin’s class thinks that he eats cat and other kinds of animals. Kevin is combated with stereotypes also. People think because he’s Asian he’s cheap and nerdy. He says that he bought a top of the line calculater which dosn’t him nerdy. He also says that he is invited to lots of parties because he’s cool and not nerdy.

  24. When Jin first arrived at his new school, he was introduced, and accused of eating dogs. Dogs? Ok... That kid probably heard that from someone who probably didn't even know either, and didn't even take the time to think and realize that most chinese people don't eat dogs.
Examples of stereotypes that Kevin points out are that chinese people have squinty eyes, eat cartain types of food and get A's in every class. Those stereotypes are not true. I've seen a chinese person with wide eyes. The chinese kids in our grade eat the school lunch everyday and they don't bring dumplings and egg rolls for lunch. And I've seen a chinese person with lower than an A. All those stereotypes are stupid and not true at all.
The " Yellow Peril" is a stereotype on the wikipedia page. It's terrible because that's assuming that when chinese people come to the United States, they'll ruin everything for all the white people. It's unbelievable that people would go along with it.

When this question is asked the teacher doesn’t stop it only says “ I’m sure they stopped before he came here.” Still smiling like normal. The kids at the school think that Susie and him will be set up to be married. ( Susie is also Asian.)

    2. They think he is cheap, a nerd and that he has no social life. He says he is not cheap because he has a designer calculator. He is not a nerd because he got a B+ on a test at school. And he has a social life because his phone never stops ringing and he gets invited to all these cool people parties.

    3. They are smarter then most Europian Americans. Which is not true ( always) Asian people are as smart as everybody else but they have to work just as hard as everybody else to achive it. And another is their cultures and what they eat. they don’t always eat the same thing. It is like saying Americans only eat Hamburgers and French Fries.

  29. In the book “American born Chinese” the character Jin first went to his new school. I feel that this is stereotypical because not all Chinese people eat dogs, but Timmy thought that since Jin was Chinese he eats dogs.

In the video “I Have A Deal It Stereotypes” Kevin is a boy who has heard stereotypes about himself and jokes about the stereotypes. For example, stereotypes like all Chinese people eat certain foods. This might make Kevin act more seriously. Kevin might make a joke about the stereotype, all Chinese people are smart

They watch cartoons and have epic battle’s that left there toy’s with spit. The morning the day they arrived to there new home Jin Wang went to his new school, Mayflower elementary school. The teacher first mistakes his name to Jin Jang and then say they came from all the way from china. Then this boy name Timmy asked a stereotypical question.”My om says Chinese people eat dogs.”Then the teacher said that Jin doesn’t do that that they stopped doing that when the arrived at America. There was only one Asian girl in there class name Suzy Nakamura they spreaded rumors that jin and Suzy were arranging a wedding at the age of 13. Then ate lunch time they asked him what the hell is a dumpling and then the boy’s said,”stay away from my dog. Jin didn’t really had a lot of friends.
Kevin Say's that the stereotype that Asian people just eats fry rice, dumplings, and egg rolls.
Kevin Say's that not all Asian people do those kind of things. He also talks about what other people stereotype of Mexicans,English's and Indian, and France. That people think that certain people eat certain food because of there race.

a exocrine with stereotype is when i like to play football in summer people play and when i like Jin was born in American but is Chinese he came from San Francisco and went to a new school and when the teacher introduced him she got his name wrong and where he came from so that is stereotype because she thought where he came from because of his appearance and Timmy said that they ate dogs and cats and the teacher said they do not do that when they came here anymore so she thought they did of where they came from and during another class they introduced Wei Chen the teacher got where he lives from and his name wrong
when Kevin says they eat that kind of food and not all people in that area might not like that or eat that all the time that is stereotype because he saying that they eat that and some people might not4. dogs and cats. This is a incorrect stereotype because not all Chinese people eat that anto play they say i am to short and they think i am young then and when i tell them they do not believe me so i d. o something else which might happen again or not

  32. In American Born Chinese, Jin was stereotyped almost as soon as he walked in through the classroom door. A lot of his classmates were laughing, assuming he was Chinese, and saying that he ate dogs. Stereotypes (are often) rude and usually not true assumptions about someone’s race, or ethnicity.
Some of the stereotypes about Kevin were that he was cheap, nerdy, and that he has no social life. To combat these stereotypes, Kevin said that he was a “bad kid,” and he had gotten a B+ as his grade. He also showed that Asians don’t have slanted eyes, by showing his own. He said he wasn’t cheap, because he bought an expensive calculator.
I think it’s really rude of people to stereotype Kevin, (or anyone!) because most of the time, the stereotype isn’t true. I think it wasn’t right for people to call Kevin cheap, when they didn’t necessarily have to know him. I also think it was horrible to call him nerdy, even though he might be smart. Being called a nerd isn’t fun, especially when you’re in a school full of other people. Being called names in front of other people is NOT fun at all.
Luckily, I have never been faced with stereotypes.

  33. Asian stereotypes that bother Kevin are when people say he is cheap, people say he is a nerd and they say he has no social life.
When people say that he is cheap he says he is not because he brought the new top of the line “ti84” calculator. When people say he is a nerd he says he is not a straight “A” student the got a “B” on one of his class assignments. When people say he doesn't have a social life he says that he has a lot of friends and his cell phone is always ringing.
African American people eat fried chicken and catfish.
I felt upset when i heard that because not all black black people do eat it.

  34. One incident that Jin Wang goes through is when the school thinks that since Jin Wang is chines and so is this girl in his grade name Suzy they think when Suzy turns thirteen, her and Jin will get married.
The examples of stereotypes for Asians are that they think Asians have no social life, but he not because he has his phone ringing off all day. They think Asians are cheap but he’s not cheep because he has a brand new top of the line calculator. They think Asians are nerds, but Kevin is not because he don't get all A’ s he gets B’s and B+’s.
It had said that “Asian Americans have also been stereotyped as a "model minority"; that is, positive traits are applied as a stereotype. Asians are seen as hardworking, politically inactive, studious, intelligent, productive, and inoffensive people who have elevated their social standing through merit and diligence. This label is given in contrast to other racial stereotypes which routinely accuse minorities of socially unwelcome traits: such as laziness or criminal tendencies.”This makes me think why would people be so mean to certain types of people for just the way they dress, look, and what there culture is.This make me feel sad for the people who is begin treated like this from others.
I had to deal with stereotypes ,when me and my mom had went shopping in Macey’s the lady was white and when I gave her the money in her hand the lady had push my change on the table, then my mom had set her straight by telling her off. Then my mom asked if she can talk to her manger.

  35. Jin is a boy who moved from California to san Francisco. When it was Jin's first day the teacher pronounced his name wrong and said he moved from China.A boy in Jin's class said if jin eats cats or dogs. The teacher said no but she said he stop that a long time ago because he moved to America.

Kevin said 2types of stereotypes he deals with are.The foods Chinese people and that there eyes are slanted. All Chinese people don't eat Chinese food some don't like it at all.Not all Chinese people have slanted eyes some are normal.

Yellow peril is a ancient stereotype stating that a person has come to take a white persons job.But that's not true some come to America for a better life for there family.Anothere is being nerdy.Just because your smarter than some people means your smarter,it means you study harder than they do.

  36. 1. I found on pg 31(Yang) of American Born Chinese that all of the students thought that Jin and Suzy were going to get married because of their race.It seemed that Jin and Suzy was the only Asian people there so they assume that they were going out, again because of their race.

2.The stereotypes that bothered Kevin was that he was nerdy,he only eats egg rolls and rice, and also that he is not cool.

3.It was laziness and criminal tendencies. This makes feel mad because they think that they are perfect and the Asians are not.Everyone is not perfect.

4.The stereotypes I had to deal with was that all black people like chicken and watermelons.

  37. In American Born Chinese the character Jin has to deal with stereotypes when he first attends his new school. People were saying things like Chinese people eat dogs and he has to get married to a chosen wife. Even the teacher was stereotyping. Jin felt bad when that happened. All he wanted to do was fit in.

In the video the three main stereotypes Kevin said he has to deal with were Asians being cheap, nerds with no social life. Kevin tried to prove he wasn’t cheap by saying he has an expensive calculator but that only supported the idea that he is a nerd. He tried to prve that he wasn't a nerd by saying he got a B instead of an A. He also got someone to call his cell phone to act like they were going to a party where all the popular kids will be. That backfired on him though because it was fake and he ended up looking stupid.

One stereotype that is based on Asians is they all have "bowl cut" hair and overgrown bangs. Another stereotype is they all know martial arts. I think it is offensive to Asians for people to just make assumptions about them based on someone else. People are judging them by how one person look and what one person knows. I don't think anyone would like it if someone took one persons actions and said a whole race or group of people do the same thing.

One stereotype I have to deal with is "all black people like fried chicken." I don't like fried chicken. I'd prefer baked, grilled or BBQ chicken over fried any day.

  39. His eyes bother kevin about the asian stero type. And another one is about him being a nerd cheap and no social life. And another whone is about his eye balls being slant but they are big. everyone thinks that he get’s good grades. And he also mentions other stero types about irish people. They drink beer and eat poatates. He also mentions that african american people eat fried chicken.

One was about the asian stero type about him
having slanted eyes but he has big eyes.another one is if he gets a At then that means that he is a geek he said this isn’t true because his cell phone is always ringing. .and another one is that he always get good grades, this isn’t true because he showed that he got a “B” on a test.

  40. The kind of stereotypes American born Chinese faces is that when he was a monkey people didn’t think he could fight and people took over him until he stood up to him. Another thing he faces is that when he first started school he was being judge of the color of his race, and people was making fun of his name. The last thing I want to point out is when he was trying to get a girlfriend. People was telling him that’s not his type a girl. I think he need to choose for himself. Kevin was talking bout Asian only eat Asian food and like rice and chicken. Kevin really don’t like that. Kevin is letting us know not to judge nobody of they race and to try something new once in a while and to make new friends.people be busy on kevin because of what he look like.

jin wang is a boy that lived in san francisco. he moved to the city and went to a new school the first day that he went the teacher proncuces his name wrong and said that he moved here from china. One of the boys in his class said that his mom said that chinese people eat cat but that not alway right.

  42. 1.An incident that happened through out the story with Jin is that he moved from Chinatown to San Francisco, California and he started a new school where there isn’t that many of his people. His teachers think that since he’s chinese he can only speak that language. It’s not right.

2.Kevin had to deal with people talking about how he’s asian, and he can’t do nothing about it and he can’t deal with it and he feels embarrased. He gets made fun of because what he eats and the way he looks, and he how he only eats chinese food and plays with Pokemon cards.

    3. Asians are being stereotyped by what they eat and how they look. One stereotype is that how asians can’t be with certain people in a relationship and how asian woman look like chinese barbie dolls.

    4. I never been stereotyped or stereotypical.

  43. So far in American Born Chinese an incident that Jin goes through that illustrates a form of stereotyping, is when he first arrives at his new school he is introduced and immediately the teacher assumes that he is from China coming to the States (Yang, 30). Even though he isn’t coming from china rather coming from San Fransisco, just by knowing what he looks like, how he talks or his ethnicity people assumes he is from that country, but he’s not. Another stereotype would be and I have experience this in real life...is when you see 2 Asians, a boy and a girl everyone thinks they’re in love or going to get married at some ridiculous unrealistic age (Yang, 31)! I think that's wrong because they may even hate each other and you may never know unless you ask. Many people don’t though and it causes embarrassment and wrong assumptions.

Some Asian stereotypes that bother and amuse Kevin is that all Asians are nerdy. He shows this when he brings out his calculator to show he isn’t cheap. Another stereotype Kevin faces is that all Asians are unpopular. To show this he purposely calls his friend telling him to call him on purpose and say he has parties to attend when he really doesn’t. There is a stereotype about Asian physical attributes and traits. This talks about how Asians have slanted eyes know how to do martial Arts. I feel that this is wrong because look at me I’m Asian and I don’t have slanted eyes or know how to do Martial Arts...technically. There is another stereotype called "Yellow Peril" that talks about how Asians coming to the states take away people’s jobs and what not. I feel that this isn’t true since you would need interviews and job application and if the Asians coming to the states are capable of doing this then they deserve the right to work and earn money!

I have been in situations where there were stereotyping me. One would be that people assume just because I’m Chinese people in the States think I don’t know any better. Like this one time I was playing soccer and there was no ball. So this one dude said go get the ball in the storage area. I didn’t want to get in trouble so I said, “No!” He asked why and I told him I didn’t want to get in trouble, what he replied to me was, “It’s okay your Chinese so the teacher will think you don’t know any better.” I think that is wrong especially because I do know better and I don’t wanna get in trouble!

  44. When jin was in a position were he was stereotyped is when he just arrived at his new school all ready for school when the teacher called him up to introduce himself and the teacher said he was from china but he was actually from San Francisco. The kids in class also said that Chinese people eat cats and dogs and that jin and Suzy another Chinese girl the other kids made up a rumor that on Suzy's 16th birthday jin and her were going to get married .Kevin says that stereotypes usually come from the kind of food you eat like if your Chinese you eat rice and dumplings and if your African American you only eat catfish and fried chicken. No I have never been stereotyped.

  45. in the book american born chinese it was a stareotype when jins teacher said that he was from china when he is really from safransisco and that was a stereotype because he is not what she said hes from and its also one because she was soposing he was from there when she didnt even no where he was from.

the stereotyepes that where bothering the kid from the video was that he was saying that people in school where making fun of him asking what he was going to eat for dinner saying he was going to eat rice and eggrolls.

  46. 1.On page 31 where the boy Timmy in Jin’s class said “my momma says Chinese people eat dogs and the teacher says”in fact Jin’s family probably stopped that sort of thing as soon as they came to the United States. That right there shows stereotyping because everybody knows that people from the United States say Chinese people eat dogs and cats but in my opinion its not true.

2.Kevin describes many stereotypes people says he’s cheap he’s a nerd and he has no social life.

Kevin offers several combats of stereotypes he’s not cheap because he has a new top of the line calculator. And he’s not a nerd because instead of him getting an A+ he got a B+.And he does have a social life because he “calls” his friend and ask him about a “party” that is supposed to be going on.

3.I would feel uncomfortable and not welcomed if people teased me everyday .Imagine going somewhere and being teased everyday. How that make you feel?

  47. Jin has to deal with the stereotype of being Chinese and people making assumptions about how he will marry a Chinese girl and how all Chinese people eat dumplings ,Kevin deals with many stereotypes such as being a geek and being Chinese and always getting straight A's. Kevin says that his mom calls him a descrace to the family because she over head him saying he didn't get an a this time but he did because he’s a geek. the stereotype that Kevin is Chinese makes me feel a little angry because at the end of the day he is still a normal human.

  48. When Jin first moved to America, there was a kid that said that his mom said that Chinese people eat cats and dogs. The sad thing about was that teacher didn’t even try to back him up and try to defend him. He says that people says that he plays Pokemon and eats fried rice. He also said that he doesn’t eat fried rice everyday and he doesn’t play Pokemon. He also says people says that he doesn’t have a social life but he says he does.

  49. In the novel American Born Chinese, Jin goes through a stereotype when Timmy says in class his mom told him Chinese people eat dogs.

The stereotypes that amused Kevin were when people thought that he was cheap and had no social life. Kevin says that he gets calls all the time to go to parties but really he asks his friends to call him. Kevin says he is not cheap because he bought a designer calculator. But by buying the calculator it shows he is a nerd.

Yellow Peril is an old stereotype saying that a person has come to America to take a white person’s job. But that is not true; some people come to America for a better life and to help their family. Perpetual foreigner is another stereotype about Asians not able to fit into their surroundings. I do not think it is right for people to make assumptions without knowing the truth.

I have had to deal with being stereotyped. Kids at school would make fun of me by saying I was from a turkey, the bird.

  51. Kevin does not like when people say they have slanty eyes and they are cheap and have no social life and are nerdy. Also they only eat shrimp fried rice and play animay games (ex: pokemon, yu-gi-oh) These are stereotypes because I know people who don’t do these things and are asian. I have seen that just because people know your skin color they can tell you what you eat and what you drink and that they can make fun of it and make it as if you eat something that they know you don’t. Another is your facial features they like tomake fun of your eye shape and what you do

  53. As I turned the corner the dog pulled my triceps like a rubber band and letting it go. The sight of the dog going to the bathroom made me squeal at the sight. The smell was not only despicable but like a dirty man coming home from work late at night. The honking of the car made not only the dog jump but also me.I had the crackling bag of dog poop touching my fingers. My feet scraped the floor as I was pushed up the sidewalk like a man getting arrested from his home. My dog would bark like as if trying to notify another dog about something that happened. I would easily get distracted by pedestrians trying to get by without getting killed by this vicious dog. The dog would carefully pick up scraps and bones from the ground trying to see if it could find DNA. We would walk up the stairs and it would walk fast like we were in a race.

1Brothers in Arms by Paul Langan and Ben Alirez

2.Martin Luna is a high-school student that got transferred from Zamora high. The character is well developed because the authors not only give a background to his life but gives us an understanding of the problem.
    3. The main problem in the story is that Martin`s younger brother got shot by a drive-by and he lost him. On one side you have a nice, caring and respectable person then on the other there is a boy that wants revenge and hangs with this bad gang. It kept me reading the book because it kept a connection between both sides that had me guessing what would happen next.
    4. The story takes place in somewhat of a ghetto neighborhood with gangs and series of drive byes.It effects the story because then it would make sense because you wouldn`t get shot in the suburbs.
    5. I like the sense that it could happen in real life and not everything is not a fairytale and things like that do happen.

  55. A example of Jin being stereotyped was when he first went to school and everyone, even the teacher were just thinking of things to say to him and about him because he was Asian. Also while he was in school the kid in the school were saying things like how him and another Asian girl were married, just because he was Asian. Some things that bother Kevin are the things like how people think he is cheap, he has no social life and how people think he’s a nerdy. Something that amuse Kevin is how people think that certain cultures only eats certain foods. He started naming certain things that people say people eat like with different cultures and i know that some people find that offensive and he was saying how you can eat different things in your cultures.

I have had to deal stereotypes like how Kevin said in the video how people think we only eat certain foods or how we dress or how we speak and its really hurt full. Also how we act toward people like the words we use that can or cant use. I find stereotypes to be very rude and disrespectful.

  56. The scene that I thought was racist was when Greg told Jin to stop hanging around Amelia because he was Asian well he didn’t exactly say that but I think that’s were the conversation was heading. He said that people think that all Asian people have slanty eyes and another was that people thought that all Asian people only eat eggs rolls and play pokemon. Kevin knew about all of this stuff because is Asian and had to go through some of these stereotypes. I think that model minority stereotype is kind of true because some Asian people push their kids to be smart and others try but kids have a choice to listen or disobey the rules. And the yellow peril was interesting because Caucasian people treated Asian people with disrespect. Stereotype is when people judge people on how they look, it makes people fell unwelcome my people wonder will they ever fit in.
