Fairy Tales are Everywhere!

Snow White, Disney’s first animated feature, was released in 1937. Disney’s 50th film, Tangled, a new take on Rapunzel, was just recently released.  Take a look back at more than 60 years of classic Disney films.  Can you spot any Grimm's fairy tales?  (Remember: Disney tried to tone down much of the violence in the Grimm's tales in an effort to make these stories appeal more to young, modern day viewers.)

Which one of the following movies is your favorite?  Which movie is your least favorite?  Why?

Please reply to this prompt in one paragraph.  Include a clever intro, details, and more details and the reasons behind your choices.

  1. Dear Tr.Lacey

My favorite fairy tale is Lion King because it is a love story mixed with an action movie. I also wanted to include that even though I don't think it is a disney fairy tale but my favorite movie of all times is ''THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS'' I try to catch it every time it is on and I really like jack the pumpkin king. My least fairy tale has to be SNOW WHITE because every time I try to watch it, it just doesn't catch my attention to keep watching it like other fairy tales do.

  3. Dear Tr.Lacey,
First I have to say I love all of the disney movies.Basicly im a disney nerd.I know most of all the songs from every movie.I have to say im a disney fan I have most of the movies at home but I want all of them on DVD but instead I have them on DHS :-( . The way the put the songs together. Also seeing how disney changes over the years is amazing. I have to say I really can't tell you my favorite but I know for a fact that HERCULES is one of my favorite movies. The way it shows a zero to hero is cool. I also like The character Phil he's Hercules trainer to become a god. The way he talks cracks me up. I also really love Princess and The Frog , hearing the music from New Orleans and seeing a twisted version of princess and the frog is very creative. The last movie I like is Fantsia 2000 it's a movie about classic music with out sounds so all you hear is music while watcing a movie. MY least favorite Disney movie is hunch back oh notre dame, I like this movie but it breaks my heart to see the way, the man treats Quasimoto. I feal real sorry for him, but the song are enjoyable. The ending was a lilttle sad for disney but over all the movie was good.

  4. My favorite Disney movie would have to be The Little Mermaid, not because it's my favorite story necessarily, but because I associate it with so many great memories. I'm not absolutely sure, but I think The Little Mermaid may have been one of the first Disney animated musicals.

In any case, my little sister and I knew all the words and we would take every opportunity to wrap a towel around our legs, pretending that it was a fin, and belt out, "I want to be where the people are...PART OF THAT WOOOORLD..." all the while looking mournfully towards the horizon.

The summer when our Little Mermaid fever had reached its peak, I went to Maine on vacation with my family. It was an eight hour car ride. And, we owned the Little Mermaid soundtrack on cassette (yes, I'm that old - cassettes!). I'm realizing now that my parents were very patient people.

  5. My favorite Disney movie is lion king because in my opinion it is one of the most action packed Disney movie. I liked the part when Simba fought scar because I thought that was the most action packed part of the movie. The saddest part was when Simba’s father died. My least favorite was all of the Walt Disney films that involved a princess. Those films bore me to death, the first 20 seconds of the film and I am already asleep. Those are the films I like and dislike. Thank you

  6. Action and humor are the spice of a good story. My favorite Disney movie, Hercules has all the ingredients to tell a good story. Hercules is a myth that adds the flavor to the story. I like myths. I also like this movie because it has a hero and it is action packed with a smooth and tasteful ending. The whole movie is my favorite; there was no bad part. I did not know about a third of the Disney movies on the video. The movies I do not like are ones without humor in them. I do not think that these movies are funny, Bambi, 101 Dalmatians and Treasure Planet to list a few.

  7. First off just let me start off with I'm not a fairytale person.A fairytale that I like is The Little Mermaid because of the bird he had such a creative mind.I didn't like the father of Ariel because he had someone watching her instead of taking care of her himself. Also, how the other mermaids treated her like she was different.

My favorite fairy tale is the Lion King. I like this fairy tale the most because its a good movie with nice settings and its not for just babies but for all ages. My favorite characters are Simba and Nala. I liked how they stuck together through thick and thin no matter what happened. I also like how they would play and sing during the movie.

    Dear Tr. Lacy,

I chose Snow White as my favorite Disney movie because it is the only one that feels like you are in that world. The figures are very well drawn. They used a process called roto-scoping where they film the real actors and they would draw each frame of the film. It resulted in more realistic effect in a scary and funny way.
The voice acting is great because of the 1930’s style of speaking. It pretty much is the only Disney film that is trying to be wow it’s audience, while the rest start to lose their magic as time goes on. In the 50s and 60s the cost of animation got higher and the films looked cheaper because of it. It was not until they had a huge comeback with the Little Mermaid that Disney films had a comeback.
Although the story based on a Grimm Fairy tale is very sad in parts, it also very funny. Snow White is the only Disney movie I like.

  11. Teacher Lacy,
My least favorite Disney film is the Lion King because it doesn’t have the old 30’s Disney charm and I don’t find the story very interesting. I looked to me like a Disney movie made to make money. I didn’t like the voice acting because it sounded like many of the other Disney films. Show White is better has everything -comedy, fantasy, and lots of drama.

  12. My favorite was Tangled. I liked Tangled because it had me in the edge of my seat and it had a different end of what I thought it would be like. I don't have a least favorite because I haven't seen most of them, but even though, I still like most of the Disney movies that I have seen. I like Disney movies because they have songs in them and if you know the movie really well it is fun to sing along with the songs. And after you see the movie you have that song in your head. I especially like The Little Mermaid, 101 Dalmatians, Mulan, Peter Pan, The Lady and the Tramp, The Jungle Book, The Lion King.

  13. Yes I can spot any Grimm's fairy tales in some of the Walt Disney films. To start off in Snow White a Queen was very selfish and she would ask a mirror everyday saying who's the prettiest and all that junk about her, the mirror always replied say it was the queen. Then when Snow White came along and the queen asked the mirror it would say Snow White. Then the queen gets upset so, she sends a hunter to kill her and bring back her liver so she can eat it. Also when the queen found out that Snow White was still alive and not dead the queen tried to kill Snow White, so she would the fairest and prettiest of them all. So the queen tried to poison her so Snow White would die and the witch would become the most fairest and prettiest of them all. This relates to the Grimm fairly tales because these are all violent acts of injustice. My favorite movie out of all of the Walt Disney movies is all the series of Shrek. This is because I think Shrek is very funny and the people in Shrek are always on an adventure. The movie I dislike is Little Mermaid, I actually regret watching it because in my opinion it is aimed at a group of females and not males.

  14. Dear Tr.Lacey...
You wanna know my favorite disney film , well theres no question about it!!!! My favorite disney is of course The Lion King because that where I got my name Nyla.:) I spoted alot of fairy tails that I adore in that clip but The Lion King is definatly my favorite if not one of my favorites. When I was little i would watch that movie and always think of Nyla and her mom as me and my mom because it was so similar if not the same because of the way they acted(besides the fact that they were lions). But I would also have to give a warm consideration to Hercules because its like those two are the movies that I grew up on watching along with Pocahontus and Tarzan of course. Those of which are also my favorites I don't really have just one favorite, there are just too many. I don't have a least favorite because I like to look at a fairy tail, no matter what it's about a see if I can connect it in some kind of way to my life or myself to try to find a place where nothing is wrong and to live life like a fairy tail, they are one of my inspirations of something that couldn't happen but if it did it would be vey nice so I wanna set a goal to make it happen, and that expands my imagination and I love it !!!!!!!!! I think without fairy tails life wouldnt be the same because no one would have a imagination. There are no words to really describe how I feel about how important fairy tail are. JUAT A LITTLE PEACE OF MY MIND :) !!!!!
    LOVE NYLA WEBB

My favorite is Cinderella because I like how Cinderella met the fairy God mother, and how The God Mother help Cinderella with her amazing magic. And my least favorite is Mulan because I do not think it's interesting. I love fairy tales and I watched fairy tales like Cinderella, Little Mermaid,Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and The Beast, and Snow White until the end. I like Princess and barbies too, i Watched Princess and barbie for lot of time. But when I see Mulan for the first time, I turned off the video and change it with video of Princesses and Barbies.

  20. My favorite Disney movie that I've seen so far has to be "Bambi," because each time I watch it, I start to cry because I think of how hard it would be to lose my mother. (I also love the second one, but not as much...) I know it sounds like I like the movie just because it's sad, but what I'm really trying to say is it's got a great storyline. I also like the movie, because Walt Disney was actually one of the actual creators, and the animation was actually a real work of art. After Walt Disney died, the movies just weren't the same.
I couldn't watch the YouTube video link, and I don't know if the "Jungle Book" showed up, but that's also one of my favorite movies, because I used to watch it so often. Also, that was the last movie Walt Disney helped with before he died. It makes me sad to think he didn't even get to see the film after he helped create it!
My least favorite Disney movie is "Pinocchio," because it was really boring in my opinion. I think that the storyline didn't have enough big parts of suspension.

I think my favorite fairytale (out of the fifty shown above) would have to be Aladdin. It was very hard to pick a favorite out of the many childhood movie memories. I would say my least favorite movie is snow white. I don't know why I don't like snow white, I guess it bores me. I like Aladdin because I could easily understand what was going on.

My favorite Disney movie is the Little Mermaid. This is my favorite Disney movie because it was about someone chasing their dreams and going for what they believed in. Also this was my favorite movie because it was about swimming and princesses, which were some of my favorite thing as a little kid. Lastly, it was filled with adventures music and mythical creatures.

My least favorite Disney movie had to be.... I don’t think I have one. I love all Disney movies. I love them because they are colorful and musical even the black and white Disney movies are full of color because of the characters and their personality. I also love them because they teach you a lesson. Such as in Beauty and the Beast, we all learned to love someone because of who they are and not what they are and inner beauty. Belle loved the beast even thought he look very scary and he turned out to be a prince.

  23. Dear Tr.Lacey,
@KAYLA:I disagree with you "Nightmare before Christmas" actually scares me. This is my least favorite Dsiney movie. This is because after watching this moive I had bad dreams and was afraid to go to sleep. As a 7th grader today I am still afraid to watch that movie alone.

@ALLURE:I agree with you my most favorite Disney movie is "The Little Mermaid". I love this movie because it's funny it makes me laugh and there's amny emotions. Also it reminds me of another show I like called "The Snorks" on Boomerang, another under water fishy story.

  25. My favorite fairy tale would have to be Mulan, and this doesn't have anything to do with the fact that it has to do with an Asian person. In China, girls were always inferior to boys and this movie proved that girls could be just as good, or strong as boys. When she dressed up as a boy, they all treated her as an equal. Once they found out she was a girl, though, they treated her like she was a disgrace and that she should be ashamed of herself. My least favorite Disney movie would have to be Bambi. I think that movie is so sad! To be honest, I love all disney movies but Bambi has to be my least favorite. Also, I like Dumbo because it proves that just because you are different, doesn't mean you're not as good as anyone else.
