"Oh say can you see..." Is Philip Malloy patriotic?

For your first blog commentary, I'd like you to reflect on the word patriotism.  In your opinion what is patriotism?  When Philip Malloy chooses to hum or sing the "Star Spangled Banner" during Ms. Narwin's homeroom is he being patriotic?  Use evidence from the text to support your claim.  If you could ask Philip to define his idea of patriotism what do you think he'd say?

Answer all of the above questions in one to two paragraphs to receive full credit.  Don't forget to proofread your work and check for spelling and grammatical errors before submitting!

  1. Dear Tr.Lacey

In my own opinion i think patriotism means having respect, allegiance, and devotion for your country. I think of that definition because in NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH Philip got into trouble in MISS NARWINS homeroom class because he was humming the national anthem to himself. When during it you are suppose to be quite. And when MISS NARWIN yelled at him to stop he said you can not keep me from being patriotic to my country.
I think Philip was not trying to be patriotic because he knows that MISS NARWIN told him to stop on the first day he did it anyway. And plus he thought it was okay because he was not bothering anybody and when he was MR. LUNSER he would let them sing to the song and he would let them talk. Another reason i thought he was not being patriotic is because he knew that MISS NARWIN did not like him and he did not like her either.
If i could ask Philip to define what patriotic means to him I think he would say that it means to live up to your country and do whats write. And show your country as much love as you can.

  2. Dear Tr. Lasey,
The definition of patriotism is to be able to say this is what I like to do and this is what I`m here for in a sense. It also means to have love for or to have confidence about.I don`t think phillip was trying to be patriotic because he didn`t say it until he start having questions being asked, but he did saty and I quote"It`s a free country." What I think phillip would say it`s following your rules and having your right.

  3. Patriotism is having great allegiance for your country. When Philip sings the star spangled banner he wasnt being very patriotic. I think this because he didnt the idea until he heard his dad say it. Ms.Narwin had the right to let Philip know singing wasnt allowed during annoucnments. Philip just was sour because he thinks Ms.Narwin doesnt like him. Also if asked Philip was patriotism is I think hed say "Um Um I belief it means to love your country I think." Devonne Miller

  4. My opinion of patriotism is loyalty of your country and soldiers. I think what he did was patriotic because he might not like her but he still gets through the day so I think he was being patriotic. His mom also says he has a good voice, so why not share it with everyone. It was wrong of Dr. Palleni to suspend him because, now that he has talked to the reporter the school is in trouble. I think Philip would say loyalty, bravery and serving your city right.

  5. Patriotism means to be faithful to your country or town. When Phillip sang the star spangled banner he was being patriotic because he was honoring his country by singing the song. Ms. Narwin told him told him to stop and he didn't.I understand partially why he got in trouble. But it's one of our rights a Americans (Freedom of speech). Also for example, at any major sports event like the super bowl, NBA finals, world series, etc. Its always someone singing the national anthem and the crowd always sings along. I think Philip would say patriotic means to be loyal to your country. Matthew G.

  6. Dear Tr. Lacey,
To me patriotism or patriotic means to love your country or place. No I don't think Philip is patriotic because he doesn't show a love or devotion for something. Also his father said they're not patriotic people. But he could be because singing along to the national anthem might show love of the United States. But it could also mean that he was just feeling bored and decided to humor sing along.

In my own oppion patriotism is to have great care fore your country.I dont think that Philip is patriotic because he was just trying to be funny and interupt the class from wat they were doing. If i were to ask Philip his deffinion o being patriotic i think that he would say. Being patroitic is to care for someone or something

phillip is a strong willed boy I think that I am the same way I think that he is a brave boy standing up for what he believes in so its like why do they treat it as if its his fault for following the order of his right mind and his law love for or devotion to one's country he is very patriotic because if he believes then he will stick to it as I would as well but my main part here is to say freedom is a gift that many are lucky to have and phillip sings because its his right she may have power as a teacher but every student has a say to their life.

  9. patriotism means respecting or loving your country.I think that philip was very patriotism. He was singing a song that had to do with the country. You have to sing the star spangled banner its a song thats suppose to be sung.I think that Ms Narwin was taking it to far by telling philip to go to the princeple.

  10. I think patriotism means to love and defend your country on a daily bases. That's why I think Phillip is not patriotic. I think he is only singing or humming because Miss Narwin doesn't like it. For example he says he doesn't like Miss Narwin. Therefore I don't think Phillip is being patriotic.

  11. Patriotism to me means that this is a free country and you can do mostly what you want. When Philip was singing "the star spangled banner" he wasn't being patriotic. I think this because he wouldn't be in trouble if his dad didn't say anything to convince him to defend him self and sing. Mrs. Narwin did a good thing to let Philip know that singing was not allowed in her class. Philip did that because he thinks that Mrs. Narwin doesn't like him. If i asked Philip about patriotism he'd probly say to defend your beliefs. anais rivera

To me when Philip was singing the star spangled Banner he was trying to annoy Ms Narwin, because she asked him to stop singing and also it was a rule to be quiet when the Star Spangled Banner was on and one more thing to add was he could have song in his head.If I were to ask Philip to define Patriotism he would say loving your country enough to sing the Star Spangled Banner but the only reason that he would say that is so he would not get in trouble.

i don,t think phillop mally was being patriotic becaouse in the book nothing but the truth he said that he is going to do his best to get out miss narwins class. Also i think he was not being patriotic becaouse when he was humming the stare stangle bander miss narwin told him to stop he did not. What a real patriotic person would do whould go to a higher arthrity and then take it up with the person by itslef. What patrioctic means to me is that somebody is standing up for there rights to do something that they really want to do. But phllop just wanted to get out of mrs. narwin class becaouse when he had got sent to the princilple he sad nooooooo. your student sied

In my own opinion i think "Patriotism" means caring for your country & your self in harmony. When Philip first went into Ms Narwen's class & when the national anthem came on,He started to sing & Ms Narwen was mad at him for singing it because Philip was so used of singing the national anthem in Mr Lunser's class& Mr Lunser gave Philip permission to humm while the other student were silent because Mr Lunser said "If you keep studing,im going to let you sing the star spangle banner."

I think patriotism means someone that want to stay for something he/she wants.
and I think Philip is kind of patriotic, because he keep on singing even though Mrs.Narwin told him to stop and sent him to assistant principal Dr.Doane. I think He is like always trying to make problems because he doesnt like Mrs.Narwin and he doesn't to be in Mrs. Narwin classroom. He wants to make problem and after principal knew that he keep on disturbing Mrs. Narwin class, the principal will decide to move him again to another class

  17. In my opinion I think patriotism is when you're doing something that involes sticking up for the country and yourself. When Phillp was humming I don't think he was bieng patriotic because it seems that he wanted to be noticed. In the book it says that phillp was asking if Allison was wacthing him hum. This is the reason why I don't think he was being very patriotic.

If I asked Phillip what is his idea of patriotism, I think that his answer would be that he wanted to defend his rights and stick up for his country and he wanted to defend himself.

  18. Dear Tr. Lacey,
Patriotism: to love your country, devotion to your country or willingness to sacrifice for your country. I think Philip Malloy is not being patriotic. He thinks Ms. Nerwin does not like him because she gave him a “C” on his report card. So, he sang “The Star Spangled Banner” in her homeroom to get out of the class. He never really cared about being patriotic.

  19. Patriotism is when you are sticking up for your country, which is what Philip did. I think that when he hummed the Star Spangled Banner in Miss Narwin's class, he was being patriotic. Also I think that Philip is trying to make problems and get in trouble in hope that he will be moved to a different class again. And I could understand how Miss Narwin could have found it very disturbing in homeroom. And when Miss Narwin told him to stop, Philip said that she couldn't stop him from being patriotic. I think that Philip would say that patriotism is standing up for your country and standing up for your rights.

  20. What I think patriotism means is something that you stand up for. Also, I think it means standing up for your country. In my opinion Philip is being patriotic because he is standing up for what he believes in and he thinks it's not fair to get in trouble for humming the national anthem. In the text, it says that he thinks humming the national anthem is not worth getting in trouble for and its not fair. If I could ask Philip to define his idea of patriotism, I think he would say standing up for what you believe in even though you could get in trouble for it and if your really sincere about it then it's worth it.

  21. Dear Tr.Lacey,

I think that patriotic is to believe in what in what your country think is right.Philip was listening to what Mr.Malloy said about him being able to sing or hum the Star Spangle Banner but if Mr.Malloy knew they were suppose to be silent he would have changed his mind.Philip only got in trouble with Ms.Narwin because he was being patriotic. Mr.Malloy told Philip that it wasn't for Ms.Narwin to send him out the class for humming to the Star Spangle Banner but didn't include that she told him to stop several time and kept saying he was only getting in trouble because Ms.Narwin doesn't like him. I think if I asked Philip what does patriotic mean he would probably to believe in what your country think is right.

  23. Dear Tr.Lacey,

I think patriotism is when you fight for or defend what you believe in. When Phillip started to hum the "Star Spangled Banner" I don't think he was being patriotic. I think he was just trying to occupy himself, but when Miss Narwin asked him to stop he made it into a big deal because he doesn't like her. He didn't want to obey someone he didn't like. I also think Phillip wasn't being patriotic because he wasn't defending something he really believed in, he was just making a fuss over nothing. If he really believed in humming the "Star Spangled Banner" along with the morning annoucements he wouldn't have been worried about how Allison reacted. If I could ask Phillip what his idea of patriotism was I think he would say, "My idea of being patrioctic is doing what I believe is right or appropriate, and I think singing the 'Star Spangled Banner' along with the annoucements is appropriate.". That's what I think Phillip would tell me if I could ask him.

    Sincerely,

  26. In my eyes patriotism is respecting, honoring and pledging allegiance to my country. I do not think Philp is being patriotic because when he was in Mr. Lunser;s class he didn't even sing. Further more he did not even pay attention to the loudspeaker when they were singing the national anthem. He was actually studying and not even glacing at it. He also admits he dislikes Miss Narwin and when he moved to Miss Narwin's homeroom he just started to sing. So in my opinion I figure than philp only snag to annoy Miss Narwin. If I were to ask Philp about patriotism i figure he would say respect in a unfriendly way because he's not patriotic.

  27. I think patriotism means loyalty or love for one's country. I think this, because in the book "Nothing but the Truth," Philip was suspended for humming the national anthem. I think that even though that it's a rule to keep quiet during morning announcements in Harrison High, it should be open to the students to sing the national anthem if they want to. As Philip said: "It's a free country..."

  28. In my opinion patriotism is when you are loyal to someone or something. And you respect them or it.I think when you are patriotic to something you oblige to then or the thing you are patriotic towards.
I don't think that at first he was being patriotic but i think as the book went on he became more and more patriotic. If you asked Philip I think he would say that it is when you respect or always consider your country first. Also you should be able to show your patriotism towards your country.

  29. To me "patriotism" means to give devoted love, support, defense of your country.
In a way Philip was being patriotism but at the wrong time because at that time he is supposed to be silent and for the wrong reason because he was trying to show off for a girl.
I think Philip would say that he was saying that he was basically pledging to his country saying he'll take care of it.

I think patriotism means to stand up for what you belive in.I think philip was being patriotic because he wanted mrs.Narwin to see that he was standing up for what he though was right to do,i can prove this because mrs.Narwin gave Philip a change to tell why he did what he did and also mrs.Narwin never let philip or anyody a change to speak their minds.closing my comment if i would had ask philip if he was being patriotic he'd probably would say he was defending himself in a way he though was right to him.

  33. Dear Tr. Lacey,
In my eyes patriotism means to be loyal, respecful, faithful to your country. I don'y see why there should be a rule about not singing/humming during the national anthem. Philip did say he didn't want to be in Ms. Narwin's class, but he didn't say anything about trying to get out of her class. Maybe... well I think she might be from somewhere esle. Such as russia, because she seems like the national anthem is disrespecting her. And that if Philip is singing it, she probaly feels paranioded by it. Philip probaly isn't patriotict, but I don't see why he can't sing/ hum it (the national anthem.) So this is my response for the HW.

  36. Dear Tr. Lacey,

The word patriotism for me means to care and to respect your country. I don’t think that Philip is patriotism , I think that Philip just was humming/singing the “Star Spangled Banner” just so he could get in trouble. Philip did say that most of the students don’t like Ms.Narwin around the beginning of the book, so I think he did it just to get out of her classes and homeroom. If I ask Philip what he thinks of patriotism I think he would answer something like this “I think that patriotism means to have joy and to be part of your country, like so I’m not patriotism I just think it’s catchy so I hum to it which by the way I think it’s not right to have a rule against it because maybe some other students are really patriotism and that they will get suspended just for humming/singing it.”

I'd like to say that Phillip is not patriotic. He was just humming the "Star Spangle Banner" just to annoy Ms.Narwin. Then they lie to his parents about it.
I think that being patriotic is to be loyal to something or your state. Also to be devoted to your state. With the Phillip problem what he think being patriotic is getting his way in class and he gets to humm the "Star Spangled Banner". What Phillip would say is that it's unfair that he just suspended form humming.
The last thing I have to say is that Phillip Malloy is un patriotic

Some of my reactions were hyper because i wanted to know what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed it because it was a good movie and because it always had you thinking what was going to happen next. My favorite character was Fizzic because he was funny and because it was hard for people to kill him. My favorite scene was the fire swamp because it was funny when Westly had to move buttercup so she won't on fire again and when they fell in the quick sand and when they were fighting the big rat. They always had an evil villan and their always was a true love and their always was a happily ever after
